Lookit! It’s so pretty :)

Mate of mine helped solder up the LED lights as they used obnoxiously thin wire on them, and also discovered it needs a new brake light switch, but that’s basically it :)

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve also put a deposit down on a little Yamaha YBR125 to learn on as I won’t be able to ride this straight on the road. Thought it would be a half-decent idea to get some practice in before trying to wing the big bike test ;) here’s the little YBR:

I don’t think it deserves the “worlds worst cafe racer” tag anymore; it has really come together nicely. Also, having just done my basic rider training/secondary license test this weekend, I’m quite jealous of it and about to look on Kijiji for a GS500 to potentially make my own. Good work.

ETA: just had a quick browse. They are cheap and plentiful. Damn.

I learned to ride on a GS500, unless you have to use a different bike for your test that is much bigger, I’m not 100% certain that I would bother with a smaller bike. Though I don’t know where you are so, maybe you have to do a lower cc license first.

(I’m getting ready to take an unlimited exam for my motorcycle in Japan, and that requires me to ride a 1033cc bike because the license is 400cc-lower or 401cc-higher. So of course for me to get a 600cc bike I have to use a 1000cc monster. So I sort of understand the desire to not ride something 400cc bigger than I feel capable of.)

It says something about modern car design that that looks pretty tame compared to the convoluted and discordant designs you see today...

Yeah I’m dead chuffed with how it’s turned out :) not sure it qualifies for ‘world’s fastest’ though, considering it took probably 2 weeks of work rather than the one I was aiming for ;)

Absolutely go and grab one! From what I’m told they’re a really good bike to learn on. Fast enough to get out of their own way, but not so fast that they’re tricky for a learner to ride.

Parts availability in the New World is good as well, although not so great in the UK.

Yeah that’s exactly the reason I got the little 125. When you’re over 25 you can go straight to a bigger bike, but you need to pass a proper riding test first which will be tricky if I don’t have any practice because I can’t legally ride the GS on the road. In the UK there’s a 125cc license basically anyone can get, a sub-600cc intermediate license (with power restrictions that mine now breaches), and an unlimited one.

Huh. Seems odd that you would need to ride a litrebike to be legal to ride a 500cc, but thinking about it it makes more sense than passing a test on a 600cc bike and then being ok to jump on some mentalist 1400cc monster...

GS looks really good. What’s it worth now?

YBRs are great little bikes, that’s what I had. Found just riding that was more than terrifying enough - no need for a bigger bike.

Not a clue ;) hopefully around a grand maybe? I’m not sure. Not that I plan to sell it really. It’s kind of the perfect bike for me. I’m not overly interested in monster litrebikes. I tend to prefer my speed to be on 4 wheels. It’s quick enough to be interesting (for now) and simple enough to be rather nice to work on :)

Yeah I hear good things about YBRs. Should be perfect for just pottering around on, and with a little bit of work (welding the exhaust mainly) I should be able to make a little profit on this one too :)

I wasn’t thinking you should sell that one, so much as that if you can add a grand in value with a week’s work, who needs a job?

I meant to ask what year the YBR is. Looks a little bit different to mine, and I’m not sure if that’s just that yours is black and mine was silver.

Have you done your CBT yet, by the way? If not, maybe do it on a twist and go scooter rather than a geared bike. You’ll have enough to worry about your first time riding a motorbike in traffic without thinking about changing gear - even if you’ve had a bit of practice beforehand it won’t be practically automatic, the way it will be once you’ve done a bit of riding.

That is a very good point ;) i’mm add stuff up and see roughly what the cost/time ratio is like ;)

It’s a 2010 YBR which means fuel injection! Very fancy.

I’ve already booked the test with a geared buke so i’d better get practicing :S

I’m not sure an SV is gonna be the right bike for me but I might have to reinvestigate my insurance prospects now that I’ve got my M2.

I’ve been looking off and on for a cheap supermoto (probably a 250) to beat on/take over my short commute where my car doesn’t even get warm. I figured that’d be the route to go given the mix of gravel and pavement a bike would see with that intended use.
