jkm got a truck too. So it doubly froze over.

A 2015 Elantra GT. It’s a good car, has plenty of room, and good fuel economy, but it’s not mine. So I don’t feel a lot of attachment to it.

I’m right there with you. My wife’s car will be paid off next month which should mean it would be time for me to start looking but we’re looking to buy a new garage, I mean house, so all the savings from her car will be funneled toward that. I’m probably 2-3 years out from a new car.

I’m in a similar boat I’m still in school so the Corolla will have to last till I graduate in 2020 and probably a bit into my career unless I get a better paying job or something. It’s got 142,000 miles on it now and I put about 15,000 a year on it so I’ll probably be driving it past 200,000.

On the plus side, it’ll make it that far, and you have a responsible plan. A lot of people have neither.

Thanks, mechanically it’s in good shape and it has very little rust anywhere so I think unless I get hit or something like that it will make it.

Kinja'd!!!

I bought it last year with cash for $3700 with a set of winter wheels and tires. So I don’t make payments on it which is nice.

I hear you. I’m trying to keep my cars running a while yet. I suspect it’ll be at least another few years before we replace my car, and depending on the family situation, at least a year for my wife’s car. Maybe longer.

We only have one parking spot at the apartment (with no option for street parking in the winter [not that I’d be able to, since I need a plug for a block heater]), and I need to be smart with my finances at the moment. So until we move up to a place with two parking spots, which won’t be for a year or two, I won’t be able to get my own car.

I’m currently driving a 16 year old Honda Civic with roughly 260,000 km on it. There’s a few minor things I need to fix, and in another 40,000 km it’ll be time for a new water pump and timing belt. Mrs. BaconSandwich is driving a 10 year old Pontiac Vibe with roughly about the same mileage. We may eventually need something that’ll be able to fit three car seats, though, which likely means going to a vehicle with three rows of seats. But if that happens, it’ll likely be at least a year away.

I’m really itching to get something like a Chevy Volt. I’m growing tired of paying out the wazoo for gas, and a Volt would easily knock out 90% of my gasoline bill. It’s just hard to justify getting a new car when my current car works well enough, and I’m saving for an education for both my kids and paying off a house. Used Volt prices are coming down, but I’m the kind of person who deliberates buying a $30 hand saw, let alone spending $10K on a used car. $10K would be a nice chunk of the mortgage, and paying off the mortgage sooner is probably the more financially responsible decision, and will save me more money in the long run.

Your priorities seem well placed in all this. Unfortunately, there’s no right answer, just what feels right, if that makes sense. Here’s hoping you find a good deal on something when it does come time to shop.

Plus it’s the idea of “if I get a Master’s, will my earnings increase enough over just having a Bachelor’s to make it worth it?”

When I’m old and retired (and hopefully wealthy), that’s when I’m gonna get a bunch of degrees.
