Who the hell does this? I traced one of these wires back and it changed color four times before mating up with the factory harness.

Also, wire nuts. And butt connectors with two wires coming out of one end, none out of the other. And, and....

I totally called the wire nuts. Told my buddy “I bet you a dollar the radio is installed with wire nuts to the factory harness” so those weren’t a surprise. The blatant misuse of butt connectors gave me serious pause, though.

Jank is an understatement.

Also applies to whomever did this wiring job.

Who the hell does this?
As a friend of mine used to put it, “the enemy”.
“Remember that old Lancia? Yeah, it was in enemy hands for five years. Christ, the things they did to it!”

changed color four times
I can do one worse. a friend pulled his radio to find his whole dash, EVERY SINGLE THING, was wired with the same red wire.
he gave up. all existing problems would remain problems.

That’s why the first thing I do when I get an old new car is tidying up the install by mating ISO connectors to the existing factory harness permanently

Don’t you have a slightly more serious issue to be attending to?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 12:03 |

Right? The wire nuts are exactly what you use when kludging together 3 different 6" scraps of wire into a harness like that. But how do you have a butt connector and not understand how it’s supposed to work?!

you sure that ain’t lucas oem wires?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 12:10 |

Nah. Far too much slack. The rules with Lucas wiring are: Crimp as shitty as possible, leave absolutely no slack, use 18 gauge for 30 amp circuits.

I have no idea what you could be referring to.

I had no idea that was a standard.

This is one of those times when I wonder how many times this stereo was stolen before being installed in your car.

Yuck. It’s so satisfying to clean up that rat’s nest. Hopefully there’s enough of the stock wiring left to make it look decent.

Rule 136 on the Evil Overlord list !
If I build a bomb, I will simply remember which wire to cut if it has to be deactivated and make every wire red.

it’s like a family heirloom.

I can’t say I’ve never done anything like this before or that I won’t in the future.

My bad, that was me

No? Not knocking any bells for you? Do I have to tap it out?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 12:31 |

Yup. I’ve owned this radio for 25 years and more. I blacked out all of the righting with a Sharpie to make it less attractive to thieves. I’ve had it in two or three cars, anyway.

You ask? What about you? What’s more serious than good Oppo?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 12:33 |

I’ve never dealt with Lucas wiring, but I’ve read plenty of complaints about it and if someone tasked me with designing “Lucas wiring,” those would have been my three criteria.

Even though it’s hidden from sight. Clean it up.

Did you wire it up so the factory knobs work too?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 12:43 |

Those are HVAC knobs.
![]() 08/02/2017 at 12:44 |

99% of lucas issues are the piss-poor crimps and far-too-small wires.

Really?!

You might need to... hydraulically... lift... the concept... idk this is going nowhere.
TL;DR pretty sure it’s a collapsed lifter. Valve covers and intake are coming off tonight.

Originally it would have looked something like this

Ah ok. I like that 100% more personally lol
![]() 08/02/2017 at 14:01 |

Wait: that’s a Jaguar! At least you won’t have to worry about engine noise drowning out the radio.

That’s how I’d design a poor electrical system.
