My sensible side says GTI or Elantra GT Sport. If and when I can afford something. Unless a 2006 WRX STi in blue with gold rims comes up for sale. Then sensibility can go jump out a window.

Ahh gotcha. Yes it’s hard to justify right now. If Subaru releases a hot Crosstrek like I’m expecting though they’ll tank in price. Fingers crossed

Volvo XC70. As good of and arguably better AWD than subaru (more forgiving as well IME), better interior than the golf, and lots of go-faster parts from Volvo (V70R), Polestar, IPD, etc. Plus subarvdub bros are insufferable.

Pick up a used Mk6 Golf R, prices have dropped considerably. Plus it’s a better ride and interior than the WRX hatch I previously had

Current GTI and former WRX owner here and I say get the WRX. The GTI is capable enough but just numb and too mature for its own good, I never ever catch myself grinning while driving it. My WRX was a riot I grabbed by the scruff of the neck and threw around.
Note, if you live in an area with good twisty roads and free from lots of winter your results with the GTI may vary. I have a summer fun car I drive most days so I drive the GTI whenever it’s raining or snowing and then FWD just becomes a massive buzzkill (I had snow tires on both cars, the difference is the GTI doesnt get stuck and the WRX is a blast). My area, boring ass straight Metro Detroit, has lots of straights and 90* corners, so a car like a WRX is much better suited for flinging around on that. My other problem with the GTI is that it either has just enough power when it’s cold, so it can’t hook up, or its hot and sticky but sapped of power. The GTI IS an awesome freeway star however, so if you have lots of freeway commute I may lean more towards it.
At the end of the day it’s motivation dependent. Do you want to smile more or feel more mature?

My personal take is this. My Audi is mk5/mk6 based awd and I traveled with 2 Subaru owners to an event this year. We occasionally swapped cars. They liked my car for the comfort on rough roads. Despite a 35 horse advantage on their side I was able to hang with them on every curve and back road. It was a VR6 torque vs having the STI in right RPM range thing that helped me. Otherwise they left me on higher speed open road. We were on tarmac, dirt and gravel roads. One STI owner has been having back issues so after a day of rough roads he was in my car all the next. Haven’t been in a Golf R but have been in GTI both stock and lightly modded. I have been in WRX stock and modded up to 500ish hp. All have been a hoot to drive, would own either car myself, it would come down to the individual car, test drives, trim and what kind of roads you drive daily. Plenty of aftermarket support for either.

They say “clinical”, I say it’s lots of fun and way more refined. And not a rattletrap after 10,000 miles of driving.

I’ll have to try it out, I’m so jaded by the FWD of my GTI. I’d also like something a bit larger, I wish we still had the WRX hatch or got the Golf R variant here
