We’ve been going through the annex at the firm and have found a ton of fantastic sketches and drawings from the 50's - 70's (the cars are fantastic). Here’s just a few of them:

I find it interesting how some of the “modern” looking houses aren’t really that different looking than what’s in those sketches.

What happened to style? Now, we are lucky to get mcmodern clones of this.

Modern is a style (really the International Style ) dating all the way back to the 1920's. Modern style houses look like modern style houses.

Eh, there are still plenty of Architecture firms doing great work, but housing development builders rarely use Architects.

So thinking about an even newer take on being modern, what would it look like? More concrete and glass? Incorporation of things like solar panels and LED lighting? I know lighting isn’t architecture per say, but it certainly helps to accent it.

Must be for public or corporate space. Even the fancier 7 figure stuff in my area is almost guaranteed to be a: faux craftsman, faux Tuscan, faux farmhouse, faux chateau, or mcmodern. The tech geeks and black money launderers have an insatiable appetite for iffy design.

Well now you’ve done it. You’ve sent me following a trail of Wikipedia links for the next hour and a half. : P

Check out el dorado inc , Lake Flato , and Olson Kundig or go to ArchDaily or Architizer .

These are just fucking great. We recovered a bunch of 60's and 70's hand-drawings from a local firm that went defunct in the 1980s. It was the leading design firm in our area for a long time, so quite a few wonderful projects. A few of the renderings have the same quality of these drawings... Such a lost art. Thanks so much for sharing!

See my reply to fintail, a couple examples of firms doing great residential work.

And people building malls and commercial strips just want a plain box with a fake stucco and cast stone front and call it a day.

Some nice public and corporate stuff, but still kind of a dearth of (local) residential material. Recent PNW housing design can leave something to be desired.
One of my relatively local favorites is the late Arthur Erickson, this was modern when modern was modern. This house in particular has always pushed my buttons:

and I’m not hurt that both of those building types are being killed off by both hipsters and Amazon.

Very, very cool.

Beautiful. I dreamed of becoming an architect...
Things have worked out very well for me, but I still wonder what it would have been like it I’d really pursued it.

Hell, but worth it IMO.
I’m not a licensed Architect yet because that requires 5000 hrs of interning (1000 down!), but I do have my masters degree.

Glad you feel like it’s been worth it.
5000 hrs?! Wow. Keep on keeping on, man.

This is amazing! I tried to take an arch class, but I couldn’t put in the time for a fun class with all my needed ones and dropped it. I regret that sometimes, but oh well.
Also, I want this as a house!

I basically didn’t sleep for 5 years. It’s why all us Architecture grads look like we’re 35 when we’re 10+ years younger.

Hmm... I could almost fit in that category. Does that make me an architect?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 14:03 |

I’m not even an Architect yet.
![]() 08/02/2017 at 14:04 |

So you only look 8 years older?
![]() 08/02/2017 at 14:06 |

No, I just have 4000 more hours of interning to complete.

Oh ok cool
