How quickly he pardons him is the real question.

You talking out your ass or do you think cops should be able to pull people over based on skin color?

A former coworker’s wife was pulled over by MCSO because they thought she looked like “an illegal”. That was their reason for pulling her over. Same thing happened to a friend’s brother. Both are American citizens.

He is most definitely going to pardon him. Which pretty much undermines our whole separation of powers thing.

Did they get charged with anything? A cop can pull you over for anything they damn well please, even just driving down the road they decide to set up a check point on. Even if they don’t have a reason, they can say you were “driving erratically” or acting suspiciously. Or they’ll drive 3 feet off your back bumper at night and pull you over when you speed up.

Nope they were pulled over in order to check immigration status. There was no prior violation either real or made up.

The whole deal with Arpaio is that he was supposedly enforcing federal law and pulling people over to check their immigration status. DHS is allowed to do this in places like Phoenix, as “ports of entry” extend hundreds of miles north of the border. Agencies under the DHS can pull you over just to check immigration status without any prior violation. They even set up checkpoints on highways in the SW. You don’t have to commit a crime first.

MCSO was sued for doing this as they aren’t apart of DHS and were accused of pulling people over based on race. They lost, but MCSO kept doing it anyways. The judge charged Arpaio with contempt of court for ignoring the court order. He just lost the contempt case.

MCSO was basically just pulling brown people over and asking them to prove citizenship. DHS can do this (very American, huh?) but local law enforcemnt can’t. Law enforcement definitely can’t ignore the rulings of the courts which is what Arpaio was ultimately found guilty of.

Arizona is a crazy place.

My recollection is that Bill Clinton pardoned over 1,000 people during his final days in office.

Yeah, he was an asshole too, but I’m guessing very few of them were racist cops convicted by courts of ignoring orders to stop their racist policies. They were probably mostly ruch assholes stealing frim other rich assholes.

Uncle Joe instructed his officers to pull people over to check immigration status. MCSO was sued and the judge ruled it was illegal for them to do so. He kept doing it anyways and was thus found in contempt of court. If he’s pardoned it will show other racist sheriffs that they don’t have to worry about being punished for racist policies, thus stripping the courts of any power to protect people from law enforcement.

I also don’t remember Clinton ever personally attacking judges based on their ethnicity as Trump has in the past.

Again, you don’t need a prior violation for a cop to pull you over, you just have to be in the wrong place at the right time.

I’ve been pulled over, did the song and dance, went down to the station to do the song and dance there, went to the hospital so they could take blood, then have to pay a taxi to get me home all in handcuffs, while my actually drunk girlfriend was harassed by actually drunk guys at the checkpoint during the whole ordeal. Then had to walk back and get my car. Just a few blocks from my apartment. All because I got off the highway one exit too early figuring it’d be quicker to go that way. Never got charged with anything because there was nothing to charge me with, but one asshole for some reason thought I was high on something I’ve never touched in my life. He was pretty convincing too, had me retracing the night trying to figure out how I could have accidentally ingested the stuff or if secondhand smoke could produce the results they were “seeing”.

I get that they got pulled over for being black, but that’s not any different than stereotyping any other regions cops do, (looking like a hippie, drug dealer, driving a hooptie, etc.) it just depends on what they’re looking for at the time. Your area has a lot of boarder-jumpers, so that’s what they’re looking for. That shit happens everywhere, they pick out the ones most likely to get what they’re looking for, and are often wrong.

The point is you were suspected of breaking the law and your race wasn’t the only piece of evidence they went on (however bullshit their actual suspicions may have been). You could have sued the PD if you thought they really pulled you over because of your race. Both people I mentioned were pulled over on their way to work during their morning commute. When they showed the cops their license they let them go. These weren’t one off events. MCSO was actually being instructed to pull over people that looked Hispanic because they could be illegal. They didn’t even try to come up with other reasons. They said their agreement with DHS allowed this.

I know this seems absurdly bold, but this same SD failed to investigate over 400 cases of sexual exploitation, many of the assaults occuring in predominately Hispanic areas.

http://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2011/05/23/mcso-didnt-investigate-400-sex-crime-cases/

These guys were straight up scumbags. Instead of this stuff happening in some podunk town, it was happening in a county with upwards of 4 million people in it.

For reference as to their level of shitbaggery, MCSO officers actually got in a stand off with Phoenix PD when they tried to prevent a journalist from viewing public records.

They also onvebarrested the founders of a local paper on BS charges.

So infuriating when people don’t seem to be able to make the logical distinction between a regular traffic stop for “erratic driving”, “suspected of driving under the influence” etc. and for just being the wrong skin color. Do people seriously not see the difference? One directly stems from a reasonable suspicion that needs to exist based on an ACTION you committed. The other is simply based on being black/brown/whatever skin color. The law is ridiculously clear that the former is allowed, but the latter is absolutely not.

Just imagine these same people if cops started pulling this shit on the northern border and them just openly and boldly pulling people over simply because they had white skin.

There is so much shit against Joe Arpaio that should make any sane and good hearted person see that he is a scumbag of the worst kind. And Trump pardoned him based on nothing but political affiliation. Disgusting what this country has come to with this presidency.
