Kinja'd!!!

Incoherent rambling to follow. Feel free to hit the back button before you’re sucked in. I’m just once again stuck at work when I want/need to be somewhere important, and I need a medium to get this out.

I never thought I could be accused of being a cat person. If you include the hunting dogs that were always around when I was young I’ve had 12 dogs in my lifetime, and I do still consider myself a dog person. That sweet girl up there definitely turned me into an animal person instead.

When I met my wife she had a stereotypical cat. Attention is given on it’s terms, and trying to pet at the wrong time or spot on the body would be met with a hiss at best and possibly a swat with the claws if you were too slow to take the hint. My wife convinced me that part of the problem was she’d never been an only kitty and was lonely.

After trips to several shelters we found Gabby. She was cute enough, but beyond that I left it up to my wife because I figured “eh it’s another cat.”

She turned out to be the sweetest animal I’ve ever owned. She had two loves in life kibble and being petted. She was just over seven years old, and I have never heard her hiss in her life. Occasionally, she has to defend herself from the younger cat we have, but that’s the only time she wasn’t a little angel.

My wife took her to the emergency vet tonight, and there’s nothing they can do for her. I just wish I was there to say goodbye.

Man, I got word while on vacation that we lost one of the shop cats tonight. Only one we’ve raised from a kitten. His name was PJ, one of the best hunters we had. Finding mice and birds and blue tailed lizards all over.

He took the role over from blacky, the patriarch of the shop who came with the building.

Gonna be a long drive back to that garage next week.

A really big drink would help. Damn work rules.

I’ve only lost one pet that was still young, but with him we knew it was coming. We had him when there was a train derailment and tanker car fire when I was a kid. Hard to tell a dog to hold its breathe while we run to the car to evacuate.

I’m so sorry mate.

She loved and she was loved, that’s all anyone can ask for.

I’m so sorry, padre. My own is a grey with white socks, too. Your sweet girl reminds me of mine. My condolences to you and your wife.

What a beautiful cat she was

If there is any justice whatsoever in this misbegotten universe, she is in a place where she can eat all the tuna she wants, lap up gallons of milk, sleep in the tall grass in the shade, and chase slow mice

That’s terrible to hear. I’m sorry.

I have had similar experiences with cats (that is, every one I knew was aloof and just not my thing, as I grew up a dog person) until I met B.C., a cat that the ranch owners disliked, but she loved people like crazy. I eventually talked my parents into letting me bring her home, even though they, “hate cats”, because I told them that she was really a dog in a cat body (completely true). For example, she’s the only cat I’ve ever known that comes when you call her name (no joke). She’s also the only cat I’ve known that could look you straight in the eye like a dog, which is something a cat shouldn’t be able to do.

She’s still alive, but I haven’t had her with me in nearly 10 years because I haven’t lived anywhere I could keep a pet (crazy to think she’s 17-18 years old now). She had to move back in with my parents back in 2008 and has been there ever since. She still remembers me and loves seeing me, but she has gained a strong bond with my mom since then, so I’m not sure she’ll ever live with me again.

Gabby will always have a special place in your heart.

Via con Dios/ Go with God. I have lost a few because Dad is a cat person. Mom won’t admit she is a Cat person but she is. So just cherish the time you had and keep on the lookout for the next Animal that your supposed to Help/Love.

Lili made it to 18 before we realized her kidney issues were too much for her to handle. We did what you did - got her the best care right up until the end. She was 1/2 Russian blue and all attitude. You both did it all right. You’ll realize that much later.
