Some friends of mine have had a Commander for a couple years. It’s been having starter problems.
About a year ago the starter went out. Typical symptoms. They had it replaced.
A few months later it happened again. Everyone assumed they’d just gotten a did and so they had it replaced under warranty.
Then the second replacement failed a couple months later. Mechanic said it was probably just bad luck and replaced it under warranty.
That was about six months ago. Today the starter failed again and I had to go rescue them.
They’re ready to replace the truck, but I want to know if there’s anything y’all might know about possible fixes before they just ditch the thing. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Can’t say I’ve EVER experienced starter failure of that magnitude.

This is pretty wild. So a couple things - is this an OEM starter? If not, it’s possible that whatever brand the shop is using has a part that’s not really up to the task, but says it is in their parts books. Is the car running rough in any other way? Additional drag during startup cod wear it out, but in that case they’d probably notice it taking longer to start even with a fresh starter. Barring that, it sounds electrical, which unfortunately is a total pain to track down.

Not familiar with this vehicle, but knowing what part of the starter is failing would help troubleshoot it’s cause. Contacts? Plunger? The gear itself? Could the owner be running the starter too long causing premature failure?

4.7 or 5.7? And yeah, what kind of starter are they putting in it? Even the Mopar remans are junk, we stock them because they fail so often.

Solenoid not releasing in time?

You need to bench test the starter out of the vehicle. My bet is the starter itself is good. First suspect is starter relay, followed by crappy grounding somewhere between starter and battery.

My guess right here.

Bad battery cables? What does “failed” mean? Click and nothing, or it spins without cranking the engine, or nothing at all?
