How is North Carolina? I met a friend that works at a BMW dealer down there. Prices seem really great for housing, but I’m used to NoVa prices now, so anything looks good...

The Charlotte area is pretty nice. I’ve lived here longer than I haven’t. Hendrick has 3 high volume BMW stores around Charlotte and as long as you stay away from Lake Norman the traffic isn’t terrible.

Had a floor partner that moved back to Charlotte a few months ago and he’s now at one of those stores. Said they’re good people.

The breweries are great. The city isn’t the most charming place but there’s a good bit of stuff to do. Plenty of nice car dealers around as well.

I lived in Eastern NC (Greenville) for 5 years. It wasn’t for me. I met some great people, but I didn’t love the place. Rent was cheap though. $485 a month for a two bedroom apartment.

My In Laws retired to SC just south of Charlotte so that may be an option, they are probably 30 minutes or so from city center or so.

It’s a pretty nice place as long as you’re not trans.

I have lived in nova for a long time and the quality of life around here seems worse and worse every year. Top of the list - real estate and rent housing prices. They are ridiculous and terrible. Next up is traffic - getting so awful that you don’t even want to out on the weekend. Third is attitude - I don’t know if it’s the traffic, the rent, or just the rat race in general, but people here just have a crappy attitude.
I’m hating it more and more these days.
Anyway, I don’t blame you for getting out.

Come down to Richmond. It’s a world of difference even though it’s only a couple hours away.

Hendrick is about to open a Brand new BMW store at the new Durham Southpoint Auto Mall in about 18 months...not that I would ever recommend working for Hendrick to anyone.
And Durham is way cheaper than Raleigh.

Totally understand, just moved to NoVa - I went to rural Alberta last week, and it was a looooong 50 mile drive back to the Calgary airport. Getting on the plane was awfully hard. I hate the heat, but I have met some nice folks, so I’m trying to give it a chance. At least housing prices are half what they are in Seattle, and traffic is a 1000000% better.

I’m speaking specifically about Charlotte here.

It seems like madness. And I can feel myself wanting to shut off from outside more and more. And I don’t like feeling that way.

I had heard good things about Hendrick. Was I mistaken?

No problems there, then

How is it?

I don’t know about that. Traffic seams to be terrible in Charlotte everywhere I go. Also post up the Meepster leather pictures please. I might have you do mine.

They really like it but that is biased by their community and such stuff. My BiL and SiL and their kids live closer in to city center in NC with their kids. Gas is usually cheaper in SC, but it seems like the suburbs of any major city. Charlotte does have more thank banks for major employers.

It’s interesting. I have lived in Alexandria my whole life and I actually like it. I am old and remember when it was a little more rough round the edges, which I also liked. I think it’s a good place with a ton of stuff to do. You can be in DC in like 12 minutes on the weekend. You can be in the mountains in an hour and a half. You can be at the beach in about the same time. You can get to the Bay in like an hour. It takes about 15 minutes for me to get to my boat. There is actual real work here that pays real money. Sure the majority of the flatlanders that have moved here to work for the government suck, but such is life.
Housing costs are high, and maybe building a new apartment building (or mixed used building) on every vacant lot is watering it down, but that’s the price one pays for living in a place that has a lot to offer, in my mind.
If I lived outside the Beltway I would have left long ago. It’s a suburban hellscape the likes of which I can’t even fathom.

As soon as the door panels are finished I will. Plus I need to clean it up a bit too.
Also, He was talking about Northern Virginia so, I imagine that it is a much worse up there than it is in Charlotte. I would rather be on Independence at 4:30 in the afternoon on a Friday than anywhere near DC in rush-hour ever.

What Steve said is exactly what I would say. And you can live in SC and maybe get better schools for little ones and lower taxes, but fewer services, and taxes in NC really aren’t bad, especially compared to Up North. I prefer to live closer to work and have a less congested commute, so I’m in NC.

Compare say rock hill SC, to whichever part of Charlotte you were looking at.

Have you considered southeastern Virginia maybe?
... Just sayin. Lol
But Hampton Roads (Va Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, etc...) is a great area. Lots of stuff to do and while it is a large heavily populated area, it’s not dense. Which means it’s not hard to get that small town feel in some parts especially when you start getting closer to the NC state line. Real estate prices while not small town cheap are far more reasonable than NoVA. The only thing I can add as a word of caution is if you don’t like tourists or the military this is not the place for you. There are so many military installations around here... Heck I’m on one of them right now.
Also for what it’s worth I grew up in NC, in the Jacksonville area and I have also lived in SC. Out of them all I still like Virginia the best.

I bought my 3 from a Hendrick dealer. Honestly, I would never do business with them again.

You will constantly be told how to do your job, they will openly steal money from your paycheck, you have to drink the company kool-aid to cult levels of compliance to get anywhere but honestly, the biggest problem is it’s too damn big a company for them to actually be as invested in your success as they claim to be. That is the reason turnover is so high and they are always short staffed, from sales and service teams all the way up to management.
