A little more saturation and detail bump goes a long way to make car pictures look nicer ;)

See but then it doesn’t accurately represent the color. That’s the constant struggle

It does... When looking at the car is real life condition, you see it shine, the grass around you is greener, the ferrari looks redder. The goal is to make people feel the same way in front of your picture as they would feel looking at the car in person. Unedited picture colors are a lot “duller” than when viewed in person... Editing it properly allows the senses to feel as close as possible as when they’d see it in person. That’s what you want.

The most difficult part of getting killer photos is having proper dispersed light. Your setting and time of day made it very difficult for you not to have lots of shadows mixed with hotspots.

Oh I didn’t take the picture... just a quick edit, nothing much. But yeah a couple reflectors usually solve that problem though...

Having seen McLarens in this color in person, I think that Dsscats represented the color very well in these photos (which I think are great). Upping the saturation is really misleading with a color like this, and I don’t think it makes the photo look any better.

As I’ve explained already, the “accuracy of the color” is irrelevant when selling a car, especially and supercar like this... There are videos or they can see the car in person if needed. A longer editing would indeed diminish the saturation on the car and keep that saturation on the surrondings while reducing the amount of shadows. But that isn’t the point. People know what the car is. On the other end, colorful pictures sell and attract the eye a lot more than duller and fairly flat color panels. You’re trying to sell a shiny supercar to someone, not a “car with accurately pictured colors”. You sell a dream, not a car...

Which would you rather go look at in person? The one with the acurate colors? Or the one that sells you a dream? Trust me, most people choose the dream...

I already know what a 675LT looks like when shot artistically. I want to go see the car with an ad that has photos that truly represent that car. They could add in some artsy shots and I won’t be mad about it, but I wouldn’t want everything to be over-edited for an ad—at least for a car like this.

I don’t think that those two listings are good examples. The first one actually has great photos for an ad, apart from the over-vignetting of the interiors. But that second listing just has bad photos period.

Some great examples of supercar ad photos that are at the same time accurate/realistic and appealing: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mclarensanfrancisco/albums

Those pictures are good but most of the cars are edited too, and not just a bit for some... His edits are just a lot more visible on brighter cars.

vs the “real color”

Kinja'd!!!

He just as a very sharp camera and lens and randomly edits pictures... These pictures aren’t any better than the second ad I posted. The camera is just super sharp and clearly high-end...

Those are two different colors.

Yeah, a lot of it does have to do with the camera, but the editing style plays a part.

Anyways, obviously we have differing opinions on this. That’s fine!

Different lightning, but it’s the same McLaren Orange :)

You can see with the trees in the back that the saturation was bumped quite a bit in the first picture, to roughly the same the level I brought it in the second picture. I added a bit of contrast to replicate the heavy shadowing of the first picture, but it’s all I did...
