Okay, can any Oppos in the UK confirm what I just saw, that the UK is to only allows sales of electric cars starting in 2040? This is supposed to be officially announced later on Wednesday . . . no more gas or diesel cars.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Edit: Okay, I guess what I really want to know is: Are UK Oppos upset by this, and will you hoard cars as a result?

Following France: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/06/business/energy-environment/france-cars-ban-gas-diesel.html

Of course there’s lots of time to go back on those decisions if electric/fuel cell/whatever isn’t practical by that time.

This is going to be good. Buy your lithium futures now... Goddamned environmentalist fools don’t under stand that electric cars pollute far more during construction than fosil fuel cars do, and unless the power is solar, hydro or wind, most of the power they will use is dirty too. Not to mention last I checked, we were already looking at a lithium shortage.

Maybe a better solution would be ask people to have one less child, or not to have children, as that has a greater impact on global warming than any amount of emissions reduction could do.

OK let’s see, assuming the 11 year rule doesn’t change here in Canada and we’re not banning cars here...

2040 - 11 = 2029

...I’m importing myself a 2018 Alpina D3 as DD, 2018 Renaultsport Megane Cup as Track, and 2018 BMW X1 sDrive just to burn it. Supplies should be plenty.

Why?

I really don’t see the problem. With the way technology is going, electric cars will probably be the only reasonable new car option in 2040 anyway. Remember we are only talking about new cars here, they’re not banning 2039 and before ‘used’ cars.

I see this as a superfluous decision as the market will move to electric anyway. 2040 is 23 years away. A lot will happen in those 23 years anyway, regardless of this decision. Maybe not so much in Trumps America, but certainly in Europe.

They’re talking about banning sales of new petrol and diesel cars from that date, not banning existing vehicles.

Also, the current thinking is that hybrids will be allowed.

Ah Britainistan, always thinking in the long term. Or not.

The juice and infrastructure will come from where? Funded by who? Battery ingredients will come from where? Ah, we’ll figure that out when we get there.

They cite studies that attribute poor air quality to 40,000 deaths per year, that seems crazy. But no matter, there is still plenty of time to change the regulations if they see it not being feasible. But if they would just increase costs of fuel to the point that electric vehicles are a lot cheaper to operate, then that should spur demand for them. Still doesn’t account for range anxiety, so that will have to get sorted out. It’s bound to happen. Horse and buggy wasn’t replaced because we ran out of horses, so to ICE will be relegated to a niche form of transport someday.

Lithium is only a placeholder and still better battery technologies come along. I haven’t heard about them lately but supposedly graphene supercapacitors looked promising.

As a Brit. I can confirm this.

Can I add Bradford and Doncaster as the shittiest of shitholes?

It’s not really that concerning- it’s where the market is heading anyway and the government can always change the rules if needed.

It’s more of a headline grabber, there’s probably something else they don’t want to get press attention.

The moment someone builds an affordable, <1200 kg electric roadster with a real-life range of 400 km, I’m in.

In related fashion, not that it’ll be much of a choice, but mandatory electric cars over autonomous ones every day.

It’s a real headline, but not as worrying as it seems since...

1. No one knows what the car industry will look like by 2040.

2. The government doesn’t keep promises anyway.

3. Also the USA and its oil situation may interfere.

And regardless, all these old petrol and diesel cars still exist.
