Some say the RAV4 was the first modern crossover, for example !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . In any case, its an very early stat for the growth of the segment. Can you Spot when crossovers took off?

Looks like when the Durango and Explorer became  CUVs.

Theory: During the economic recovery from the financial crisis in 2008 a lot of younger families have been either downsizing to a single vehicle (thus opting for something that tries to cover every base all at once, the crossover) or they buy a small used car and a large CUV/small SUV to get their kids around without the fuel economy of big SUVs and without the shame of buying a mini-van.

Also: Where’d you find that data? I’d really like to track similar data for all vehicle types.

It’s amazing how closely the yellow and green regions are correlated with RAV4 and CR-V launches. The 2000 spike correlates exactly with the XA20 RAV4's launch (and then the plateau maintained with the second-gen CR-V’s launch a year later), the 2005 spike correlates exactly with the XA30's launch, and is boosted by the third-gen CR-V’s launch.

Really, the MY2011+ range is where it stops being tied to generation launches.

Oh, I didn’t see the caption. I thought it was crossovers in general for some reason.

I think you’re off a year on a couple of the generations though? But, yeah.

one part of me is very glad you used real data for your argument

the other part of me is crying that you projected a linear trend through said data.

Excel took that one and ran with it. I didn’t even know it was there until you said something

Haha. Excel will do that. Kinda had the urge to goof around w some data, but it was 2am and I should be using my data time in a more career-oriented way right now.

I’ll go with you on the first crossover being the RAV-4 and/or CRV. In my memory they came out virtually at the same time, although I really don’t know if that’s true. They were both quite popular in my home town during the SUV boom of the mid 90's through the 2005ish.

The real crossover specific crave is on the right side of your graph. While enthusiasts loath them as good at nothing, the average buyer sees it the other way around. Compared to sedans, modern crossovers get nearly as good fuel economy, offer more space, handle just fine in normal driving, and offer an easier step in/out height. They offer a pleasing driving and ownership experience to the average person. In short, moden CUVs are quite good at what most people want, and so they’re selling like hot cakes.

Not truly a wagon, because the Civic wagon was taller than the sedan and had different proportions. A wagon is a sedan with an extended roof.
