Yeah, I was drooling over this a bit ago. Swap in a Nardi and a new shift knob and I’d be SET, thanks. That’s the perfect look right there.

Let’s see what that goes for...

These two would look so nice parked next to each other in the driveway.....

I’d want the nardi wheel too, but I’m with you. These look so good with wood inside

I need to stahp looking at that car. Fitted bumpers, round taillights, the tii engine... I just need to convince myself that the Kugelfischer isn’t worth the headache (even though I know it is).

Not the cleanest, but still a cool car. This is my friend Ryan’s Tii. IMO, a perfect example for a great price, though not a roundie.

That is super nice! I’m hoping to find one in the 10k range one of these days, to drive and make pretty over time

My buddy lucked into a maroon 72 2002. He knew the guy who had it and got it dirt cheap comparatively speaking. Got a steal of a deal and the car is pretty solid and un-restored.

10k can still get you a rough Tii, or a decent regular 02. I bought my 71 for 10k 5 years ago tomorrow.

Obviously would love a Tii, but would take just about any one in decent shape. I need to lose a car before I can get serious about one, hopefully this time next year.

What’s your best and worst experience with yours over 5 years?

I think 10k next year will still get you a nice 02.

Best experience? Everytime I get in it. There’s been hundreds of moments that make me thoroughly enjoy the car. By the time the car is up to temp I’m grinning ear to ear. The best times I’ve had have been with friends because it’s an experience worth sharing. Driving 600 miles to the annual gathering of old BMWs called ‘The Vintage’ in NC is towards the top. Overall, the community is one of the best out there. I was in MN a few weeks ago and I knew of an owner out there. He picked me up and we went for a ride. Never met him. My first year at the Vintage I was at the hotel getting breakfast when I spoke with a gentleman for 30 seconds. He said if I ever come up north around Boston I’ll always have a place to stay. Many of the people I’ve met have become family. In general, everyone is friendly and willing to help out. My car would not be on the road if it weren’t for people’s generosity. If I was in a pinch, there was never an issue. Someone was always there to help. It’s worth noting that I bought my 02 as my first car at the age of 17. Today marks 5 years with the car and I think it’s the best (blind) decision I ever made.

Worst experience? I can’t think of one. I’ve been 2 hours from home and a little pin fell out of the shifter linkage and I was left stranded. I had the same thing happen while I was driving my friends race car down a mountain. I only had 3rd and the clutch was an on/off switch. I’ve had to take apart my motor and put in new pistons and bearings because it got hungry and ate a washer. I’ve had the car almost catch fire in downtown Baltimore, then I proceeded to drive it another 3 miles to a friend’s shop. I think owning the car would be a lot less fun if I didn’t have these events to look back on. They’re character building and learning opportunities. Plus they make great stories.

All in all, get an old car, It really doesn’t have to be an 02. I’d recommend one, but just go have fun and bring back some stories to tell.

That’s great to hear, but not surprised about the supportive community. I got really close to buying one that was sold before I got to look at it a few months ago. During that time a friend put me in touch with an older guy who is the area’s guru on 2002's. He lives to educate people on the cars and I will definitely be looking to him as a resource as I get closer to a purchase.

The longer I drive the more I appreciate older cars. I used to lust after and then buy the newest/fastest/techiest. Now my newest car is my least favorite. Don’t get me wrong, I really like my S3, but I love my 15 year old M3, and my 16 year old Ranger is the car that I drive the most. I’ve never owned a really old car, and it’s a toss up for me with the 2002 and Alfa GTV. I’ve been after the 2002 for longer and those Alfas are real tough to come by for a reasonable price.

I’m looking to sell the Audi in the not so distant future to open a slot in my wallet/insurance/driveway/heart for a classic.

Out of curiosity, were do you live?

Like I said, I had mine as my first car. It makes everything else feel crappy. I have an e46 330i that is pretty good, but the 02 feels so much better than most of the stuff I’ve driven. Alfas are awesome, but they’re more expensive and also a little more money to modify. There’s a huge aftermarket community for 02s so you can make whatever car you want.

I’m not on Oppo all that much, but if you’re on Facebook friend me (Chuck Pompei) and join some FB groups: BMW 2002, BMW 2002 Classifieds, and BMW 2002 Buy, Sell, and Trade.

I’m outside of Philadelphia. “main line” if you’re familiar with the area. The guy I was referred to is Bob Ball (in West Chester, PA).

I’ve never had the pleasure of driving an 02. I’ve gone on rides an sat in a bunch. What really turned me on to 02's was a regular at the restaurant where I used to work as a valet. He’s an older guy that drove a mint and I mean mint E30 325. When I was telling him how much I liked how it drove and looked he said, “If you like this, you’ll love my 2002!” He was driving it the next time I saw him and took me for a spin.

I’ll ping ya on facebook. (Trip McNealy)

No kidding. I went to school (CFS) for 6 years on the main line in Exton. I’m north of DC right now.

It’s fun to drive. I’m trying to convert a few friends to buy them. So far I think I have 2. I had an e30 325. It was sorted, but nothing to make it a sporty e30. I found the e30 to be right in the center of my 02 and e46, so I sold it. Still regret it, I’d love to have made it into a rallycross car. If you’re in the area you’ll have to take mine for a spin. You’re in a great area though. There’s a ton of 02s in MD, PA, and NY.

Haha wow crazy small world I drive by it all the time, I’m in Malvern. What’s that school like? My wife and I wonder all the time, I’ve never seen anyone outside there.

I’m near DC every once in a blue, I have friends in Reston VA. They’re having a baby in September so I’ll be down one weekend after hes born.

I can’t wait to start looking with intent! I look at cars all the time, but it’s the best when you know you’re in the market to buy.

Too funny! I think it’s a great school. It’s a boarding school for 7th through 12th grade. I was there all 6 years. It was an experience. Made some great friends and learned a lot, in and out of the classroom. I’m not one to talk about myself, but since I’ve attended I’ve been told numerous times that I am very mature for my age. I think I have CFS to thank for that. Being away from home at 12 makes you grow up. At this point I think I might be too independent, lol.

Very cool. When you come down you’ll have to take my car for a spin. I’m 2 miles off of 95, so it won’t even be out of your way.

I know the feeling. For some stupid reason I’ve been looking at Porsche 996s. When you are ready to seriously look let me know. Patience will be key, but knowing people is equally important.
