But seriously...why doesn’t chevy make a crossover bolt. The weird little encore is selling strangely well, why not crossover the bolt? an inch taller springs, a tiny bit taller tires and a small redesign on the hatch to make it a “crossover” and its done. Why not Chevy?

Kinja'd!!!

Fix your bolt sales problems. ITs even got a cool name that fits the current naming scheme.

If Chevy ends up launching the new Niva on the Renault Duster platform that it’s been planning, they could sell it here too.

They could offer a free Cross-Bow with every CrossBolt seeing as America loves it’s unnecessary murdering devices.

Are Mustang sales that good? Sorry, had to.

That was sort of my comment on the front page article. I wondered why the hell they made it a tiny hatchback? How do they expect it to go head to head with Tesla, or even a Prius. Sure they’ll get some sales with this model, but it’s not where the mass-market lies. It needs to be a sedan or crossover to tempt buyers.

I gotta be perfectly honest and say that with many parts of the automotive market, I have a pretty decent handle on why people buy what...but with electric cars I have no idea. Tesla seems to have stumbled upon the only winning formula right now which is sex appeal and market allure. They are the dark horse “disruptor” which is something Chevy never will be.

If the model s (or 3) is the apple of the car world, the bolt is the woz. Smarter, respected and...arguably...better sorted, but no one is lining up outside a Steve Wozniak store.

I just don’t know if chevy can do anything to compete against tesla until EV’s have finally breached mainstream appeal...and they haven’t.

Coincidentally...

I had not seen it from the side before. The proportions are all out of whack and it looks like cars in an animated movie where they are really tall.

This is a good idea.

It amazes me the number of medicare recipients I see driving Encores. Like, you know that’s an over-pumped hatchback with a Buick badge, right?

Sell ‘em all electric Encores. They aren’t driving that far anyway.

Ok, that works much better. Funny how adding big wheel arches and lifting the back of the roof up completely changes the look of a car.

Based on what you said, I am stumped as to what GM needs to do.

Do they need to start a new brand? Or would that be a Saturn type disaster?

The seats already sit high and give the feeling of being in something a little taller. Or at least from what I’ve heard.

That’s pretty much why most people buy CUV’s.

The new brand trick is tough, it HAS to be a luxury brand or people wont bother. (i.e. scion, bmw i etc). But GM already has one. To be honest the trick for gm is to keep after it until it catches the mainstream...OR...offer something telsa can’t (electric coupe, etc)

but its not awd [looking] and it doesn’t say “cross” “x” or some iteration of a mountain toughness theme anywhere on it!

I find the textured plastic wheel openings are kind of a trademark of CUV styling.

Yeah, is that part of the mistake? Competing with the Nissan Leaf and every other hybrid and electric car?

They advertised it as a Tesla competitor, but it’s not a pretty car. It needs to make your head turn. Make you do a double take. You can only attain that in a coupe, sedan or all out sports car design (as far as the masses are concerned). There’s also trucks I suppose, but that’s a whole different discussion as far as electrification, I think.

Ford got that right with EcoBoost, they are putting it across their entire line up and you can have that SAME badge that is on a Ford GT or a Ford Raptor. You can have that on Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Everything!

Then comes the Bolt. Nobody gave a fuck. It’s just a run of the mill little car for $30k+, I’ll have myself a plethora of other cars before I force myself to drive that, especially at that price point.

So that brings me to two thoughts, they should probably do one or both of those:

(A) Create a badge, and slap it on various products across the line up, a-la-ecoboost. Make sure said badge makes it onto halo-cars so it gets exposure.

(B) Just make a pretty damn sedan, coupe or sports car. The first two probably have the largest market. But i could see the appeal of a Tesla Roadster competitor.

But all this probably won’t happen until the price of a barrel of oil at the very least doubles. Because with this administration and these barrel prices, does Chevy really care?

Chevy wants to care because it sees the possibilities. but they are groping in the dark on the how. Maybe a halo car first? lightweight electric sports coupe? like a 240r but electric?

Yes to the 240R electric. Haha.

I think there might be a short-term gain vs long-term success kind of problem here. They sort of want to think long term, but OMG SUV’S PROFUUURRTTT MUURGGINZZZ!

A Trax EV? Give it a 200+ mile range and quick charging, and Chevy’s got a sales king on their hands.

Great idea. But haven’t you heard? Everyone *NEEDS* AWD.

Plus I must say - if the power delivery and traction control on this is anything like my Spark EV, it’s an absolute mess even in the lightest dusting of snow. I’m sure the econobox tires have a lot to do with it, but all that torque at zero and really stupid power management either means I’m spinning the tires at a million miles per hour even at the slightest touch of the gas, or I get absolutely nothing.

But that’s likely something crossover tires + a SW update can fix quite easily.
