But I can’t put it off any longer, because I need to pass inspection this month. Already adjusted the drums (which made no difference at the pedal or the parking brake handle) now I have to adjust the parking brake cables and do the REALLY fun job of replacing the pads and rotors...

Which of course requires pulling the front hubs and having a really great time unbolting those from the rotors.

Pass inspection.... are you in Australia? What kind of car is it on? Usually I dread doing anything with drum brakes because the hardware/springs collapse into dust 90% of the time. Sounds like you got the hard part out of the way already :o

What kind of car is it?

Disc brakes are usually easy. Drum brakes SUCK!!!!!!! Get coated rotors and drums so they don’t rust so easily :)

I used to do my own brakes now I just pay someone else to do it. I’ll change my own oil, I’ll flush my radiator, I’ll install a new wiring harness. But I no longer mess with brakes shocks or springs.

I’d rather do brakes than oil changes. At least with brakes I don’t have to crawl under the car and feel all claustrophobic, nor do I have to clean up the oil spilled by the stupid horizontal filter.

I’ll clean my brakes, that’s all.

Texas. The only local guy who works on old SAABs died earlier this year.

Well if you want someone to live video chat with when you do it, I’m down. I’ve done my fair share of work on terrible brake systems. One good rule of thumb is to have completely new replacement parts on hand, like drum hardware, caliper pistons, etc.

I’ve already replaced the hoses, and the rear wheel cylinders, shoes, etc. Which made me never want to work on them again.

I didn’t know he died until his widow contacted me a few months after it happened.
