Was this combo really available?

The search pops up with this vehicle having a V6 and a manual transmission. Of course, there aren’t any pictures of the interior so I’d guess that it’s really an automatic.

Have I said lately how much I love this generation of Mazda6? It doesn’t matter the bodystyle - they’re all pretty sharp.

I think V6 + 5-speed A65M-R manual was only available for the first few years, then they had manual for only the I4, AFAICR.

I, too, love that generation, as between my wife and I just got our fourth on Tuesday. Technically the third was a flip, but it was still owned by me. Only sedans though, unfortunately, but only the first was actively searched for, the other three sort of fell into my lap.

Isn’t the only engine available for the Mazda6 wagon the v6?

I love that copper one you picked up recently. If I had to replace my Mazda5 6MT, a car I plan on keeping forever, I’d probably grab a mid-2000s Mazda6 as a replacement.

Yep - I guess it does actually exist. Thanks!

Good plan. I really wish that Mazda had made a sportier midsize “people-carrier” than the MPV, and based it off the 6's platform, like how the 5 is a 6-passenger 3.

It was difficult for me to go from my Volvo wagon to the 6 sedan, especially for the rear wiper and ease of putting in cargo. I’d prefer the 5-door and wagon, but have to go with what’s available.

All wagons are v6 at least in America, they do come in manual although I don’t know if that’s only certain years or the entire first gen.

Yes, it was. The manual V6 wagon was available from 03-07, almost the entire run (the wagon wasn’t sold in 2008, the last year for the first-gen 6)

But unfortunately, the wagon was only available with the V6. I’d rather take the I4 for better gas mileage and easier to work on than any transverse V6. But Ford was jealous that it would steal sales from the Escape/Tribute

So my choice would be the 4-cylinder manual hatchback.

I’m with you. Big engines are nice, but I’d rather have the fuel economy, plus I still believe that the transverse V6 was engineered by Satan himself (I’m so glad that all of the engine problems on my PoS WindScar were all on the front bank of cylinders. If they weren’t I probably would have torched that turd and filed an insurance claim.)

And agree again on the body. If I can’t have an I4/MT combo on the wagon, give me the practicality of the hatch. I was surprised at how similar the roofline on the hatch is to the sedan. It’s not like the old days where there was no doubt you were looking at a hatch, which in America is not a good thing (even though I have no problem with large and luxurious yet practical cars like the A7 - BMW’s offerings don’t count)

Speaking as a former Mazdaspeed 6 owner, the first generation 6 is also very good at having rattly interiors, and rusting to bits.

That Mazda hatch is precisely the car I grew up in, except for the colour. Same gen, same wheels, and I assume it’s a manual, since that’s what we’re talking about here. Loved that 626. Dad drove it to death, really - 170 mile round trip commute every day for three years in the blistering hot desert. It was drinking a quart of oil every week.

I’d love to have it for a DD, though, if it was still in good repair.
