So I decided it was time to finally retire my computer from 2007. Just picked up a new 2017 iMac. Henceforth I will be shitposting in 5K resolution!

I think you’ll be pleased. The fecal matter glides into the screen like the processor is made with exlax.

Let me know when the hinge starts to sag and won’t support the screen anymore. The ones at work have all done it and it’s sad.

What spec did you go for? I’m badly in need of a new one

I just dropped an SSD into an iMac of a similar vintage. It kicks ass now.

Yeah SSD’s make a world of difference in Mac’s. I dropped one in my 2007 iMac and that was the main reason I was able to limp it along all the way until now.

Hopefully they’ve fixed it with this latest revision. The 2007 iMac I’m upgrading from is still holding well, so I took my chances. Honestly, though, I can’t imagine putting an iMac in a work/school environment with the built-in stand. That’s what the VESA versions are made for.

The Pentium-branded chips are actually pretty great. My home Windows rig has an over-clocked G-series Pentium from a few years ago on a Gigabyte micro-ATX mobo that I stuffed into an old Dell case. Hums along pretty good for a $200 build, but all I do with it is emulate old video game consoles.

It’s the base 27" spec for $1799. 3.4 GHz quad-core i5, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB Radeon Pro 570, 1 TB Fusion drive. Even though that’s the base for the 27", it’s still pretty decent kit. By the time you upgrade the 21.5" to that CPU and the Fusion Drive, you’re already at $1499, and still at a lower GPU (though to be fair the 27" puts more of a strain on the GPU even just doing normal 2D things), so basically you’re getting the bigger screen for just $300. Two other things that drove me to the 27" are the user-replaceable RAM and the faster hard drive. I’ll probably upgrade the RAM pretty soon - I wasn’t about to pay Apple $200 for another 8 GB that I can get for $70. Also, the bigger case fits a 3.5" 7,200 RPM drive instead of the 2.5" 5,400 in the smaller iMac. So once you get out of the small SSD on the Fusion Drive, the 27" is going to be much faster. I’m pretty happy and hoping to get many years out of this guy. My work laptop is an aging 2011 MacBook Air with a 2nd-gen dual-core i7 and it is still fast enough for most things that I do. One big constraint of my prior iMac was that the fastest port was FW800. With TB3, I should be able to add very fast external drives if I overflow the Fusion Drive.

I’m leaning toward the 27" for the user replaceable ram. It’s just how much I spec it out to Apple. I’m mostly doing some multi page layout and heavy photoshop and illustrator use. I want to go for the faster processor and a ssd but that gets expensive real quick

I’m not sure if the newer ones with the thin screens are doing it, I think some are. All 27s.

It’s not really right for work eh. Half of them are sitting on books to get the height right. And a bunch have something holding the screen up.

Yeah I mean I get that it makes it more expensive, but the VESA mount version is like $40 more and you can get a good arm for $100. Seems worth it to improve the ergonomics in work environment. There was a little while.. 2012-13 I think... where there was no VESA mount option from Apple maybe that’s what you have. There are kits to retrofit them with hardware that grips the stand, but if the hinge has already given out it might not work too well.

You could get all of this for a lot less building it yourself with a windows system (right?) Why would you go for a mac? Seriously asking, I guess there are some reasons

Familiarity for one. I run Adobe CS6 on a mac. Not about to switch to a windows and have to pay $600/year for CC when there are some months I go without using it at all on my home computer.

It sounds awesome. $40 or even $100 should be worth it for any company to improve ergonomics

Thanks! Nah we’ll keep using them I think. The situation I described is grim, but they work well for us and we’re not about to switch.

I’ll mention it at work though. I’m sure someone would benefit

I just picked up a 5k 2015 3 weeks ago and I love it. I was upgrading from a 2011. I was ready to go buy the 2017 but I saw a CL deal that I couldn’t pass up.

Yeah the 5K is amazing. It’s hard to go use another computer afterward. I’m on a 27" 4K Dell display at work right now and I can notice the difference in quality. Honestly, the jump from the 2015 isn’t huge, so if you got a good deal it makes total sense. But I really wanted to get the built-in USB-C ports since I’m already starting to acquire things with them.

My MacBook Pro is not retina so now I want to get one with retina. I don’t have anything with usb C yet so I am very happy with my purchase so far.
