How exactly does Motor Trend do its long term tests? How does that process work from start to finish? Do they buy the car or rent it from the OEM? Does anyone know?

I always assumed that it was given to them out of the press fleet. They are not consumer reports and have nothing to prove by paying for it.

Assuming Motor Trend is similar to Car and Driver, they order one in whatever spec they want from the manufacturer. I can only assume that the manufacturer knows who the car is going to, that they don’t send the order through a intermediary.

If it’s like everyone else, they pretend to buy a car and spec it “how they would want it” and then simply run it for however long they and the manufacturer agree to. After that period has ended it goes back to the manufacturer to be sold, usually as a pre-approved used car.
