The Valkyrie. I finally get to see it.

Oh my god...
It’s a (Dassault) Mirage
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:28 |

Why did this wing design/layout not really catch on?
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:29 |

You lucky
And
you get to see the X-15 too!
(I don’t consider myself an envious person but in this case...)
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:29 |

But was it really there?
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:29 |

dude coooooooooooooool!
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:30 |

oh hey, that’s at Wright Patterson, which is where I live now. I should go over there.
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:35 |

It crashed. I’m telling y’all it’s sabotage.

Do you mean the canards or the XB-70's wingtips that go down?
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:41 |
|
The canards.
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:42 |

Excuse me?! That’s where I am literally RIGHT NOW!
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:43 |

Best museum ever. I could spend an entire day in the missile silo alone!
![]() 07/13/2017 at 14:44 |

I got to see it when I was 10. Permanent spot in my all-time top five coolest lifetime moments.

In fact there are quite a few combat aircraft with canards nowadays (although I suppose most were designed around the 70s).
The industry designed aircraft with “traditional” wing configurations for far longer, so the full body of technical data was smaller for canard aircraft. Adding them required much more research and experimentation.
If I remember correctly canards help avoid stalls - and combined with “relaxed stability” controls, increase manoueuverability.
Surely there are Oppos here that could give a better, more detailed explanation?

Inefficient at lower cruise speeds so more money spent on fuel? But needed for the supersonic flight which nobody wants to do anymore because of cost.

Welcome to Dayton! The XB-70 is remarkable, but SAM 26000 is my personal favorite.
There are several good breweries downtown if you like beer and need something to do later. Warped Wing is my favorite.

oh, I apologize, I meant I’m in the general vicinity of Dayton, OH, not in the military or anything, sorry!!

What do you mean? If you’re simply referring to “delta wing with canard” it’s been done, look at the Eurofighter Typhoon or the Dassault Rafale. If you mean the “mach wave” drooped wingtips I just don’t think anything big enough to take advantage of it has been made since

I’m tellin’ y’all it’s...some kind of French word for intentional compromise with malevolent intent!

Basically this plane was replaced by ICBMs. Fucking disruptive technology, always taking the cool planes away. But we got to keep the B-52 for another 300 years, so there’s that.

Truth! I’d be way more excited about flying on an XB-70 than a 737-700. Southwest- take note.

A fake surrender?

I work on WPAFB. Engineer. But yay!

Well, the Concorde basically was XB-70 technology applied to the consumer market. It just wasn’t profitable to squeeze a handful of people into a tiny cabin to cross the Atlantic in 2 hours. People could just make a phone call or send an email, then make the 7-hour flight :D

Awesome you finally made it here!
Great weather to stay inside and ogle amazing planes.

Valkyre, X-15, SR-71, YF-12 (precursor to the Blackbird), Tacit fucking Blue...
![]() 07/13/2017 at 19:58 |

I later realised that in the picture you can also see what I suppose is an YF-12A, a lifting body (a replica of the X-24A?) and behind that another one, maybe (X-24B?).
Tacit Blue, no less.

I’ll go through my photos when I get home

I bet you too had a nice time there. Congrats.

Got there about 10 minutes after it opened, left 5 minutes before it closed. I was like a kid in a candy store. The new hangar is simply amazing.

Would have loved to stay, but I drove down from Ft. Wayne and had to get back.

My wife and I visited about 25 years ago. They only had 3 buildings and I didn’t get to see the XB-70. That required a bus ride to an offsite hangar. The new 4th building is jaw dropping. To see so many of the planes I’ve written about was thrilling.

Go volunteer there and give tours. I overheard a docent telling his group that the Valkyrie crashed because of “structural failure.” Yeah, the structure failed when Joe Walker’s F-104 crashed into it. The story of GE’s vanity that lead to the death of two pilots needs to be told.

It was! Massive photo dump after I get home next week.

I got the X-15, A-12 and XB-70 all in a single photo.

I was there back in March. Here’s my album from my trip

Thank you very much indeed for the link!
Too much to comment on and to congratulate you about but I just cannot pass the chance to thank you for that picture of the X-29...
(sigh)

I’m pretty sure the placard says the same thing. Structural Failure.
I might do that when I’m done with grad school. I’d have time...

I can see myself doing that, and my gf hating me for it the entire time. I got in trouble for not waiting in one place while she went to the bathroom. I’d only moved about 30 feet, but I was around the corner looking at the Junkers Jumo 004 on display. That was 2007, and I still get yelled at about it today.

I just left my wife and younger sons at home.

The X-29 was a pain in the ass to photograph, because it was too big/too low to fit in the frame. I actually ended up laying on the floor on my back and using panorama mode on my phone to get the whole thing.

....and a KH-9 Hexagon spy satellite! Much jealousy!
