But I’m between getting used R-Line wheels with used but good tires or brand new Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. What say you?
These are the current wheels btw.

R-Line wheels, then PS4S when they need new rubber :)

What is the size?

Pilot Sports are probably overkill. I’d go more with a decent-performing, much more affordable tire. I’ve been really happy with the Pirelli Cinturato line, as well as the Contintent Extreme DWS. Those two make up my last three sets on my Passat wagon. Extra grip feels like it would be overkill for the chassis. My dad has Pilot Sports on his R32, but that makes more sense for the application.

No, no, no, I can’t handle the awesomeness of these photos! They exist, but they don’t. They are out of reach. Damn you VWoA!
Ok, so I must know to fill my curiosity (and to make me more angry!). What engine options did these come with? (not the current b8 but those ones above.)

I really like the R-Line wheels, but keep in mind that the areas between those double spokes are a PITA to keep clean. Ask me how I know..

Are the R-Line rims wider than your current wheels? Having wider tires makes a huge difference too.

Not by much, the stand wheels are 235/45R17s and the R-Line are 255/40/R18

18, just one inch larger than the original wheels.

And paint them in either Black or Grey

Scrap yards? R-Line/GTI/GOLF-R are prone to crashing.
But seriously, craigslist or Ebay, the performance VW crowd loves putting oversized/different rims on their cars and always end up selling the original ones online.

I guess, but I do drive the Passat like a complete maniac, I like the grip.

*drools*
I must imagine they are, but it seems like a good problems to have, especially if I paint the new wheels light grey or black-ish.

Maybe consider the Falken Ziex, as well. IIRC about half the price of the Michelins and excellent performance all around. I don’t mean to sound anti-Michelin, but I always feel like they charge way too much compared to the big-name competition (Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear, etc)

Some gun-metal or similar colour might do the trick. The winter wheels that came with my Honda were corroded AND had brake dust residue that no solvent known to mankind could get off. I plastidipped them black. Best decision ever.

PS4 aren’t offered in a 255/40/r18, at least not in the US.
I personally wouldn’t spend the money on a high performance summer tire for a passat but that’s me.

I think a 20mm increase in tire width along with a decrease in the sidewall would be enough of a change to feel it under aggressive driving if the new wheels have the same tires as your current ones.
That said, a change from regular tires to an aggressive tire on your current wheels would probably make more of a difference to feel, grip, and handling than that change in dimensions.
Aesthetics also plays a role though. I guess ideally it would be nice to get the wider, larger diameter rims and aggressive tires, but purely in terms of handling I think changing better tires will probably make more of a difference than the dimensions.
