Seems like I’m only going to get two hours tonight because it took hours to fall asleep. I tried at 9 fell asleep around midnight and woke up at 2 and now I have to be up in an hour and a half anyway. I haven’t been sleeping well for the past few days either which really isn’t helping matters.

if you drink coffee, try cutting back.
if you drink Mother/Red Bull ween yourself off them.
try playing soothing music too.
hope this helps.

Thanks, I quit caffeine a year and a half ago. I can try the soothing music though.

Glad to read your post, given the subject of your last post. I wish you better sleep, it makes such a difference in so many ways.

Do you have an exercise routine? If not definitely start one, it really helps, no joke. How are your eating habits? I’m no nutritionist, but from my own experience, cutting back on fast food, sugar, carbs and replacing them with proteins and greens also really helps.
Being healthy at mind is hard enough; a healthy body goes a long way towards having a healthy mind. The above definitely isn’t easy either, I struggle with it as well.
I hope you feel better, friend.

Music always helped me get to sleep during my rough times. Classical or Jazz really did the trick. There’s a Jazz station in LA I used to tune into on iheart, think it was K-JAZZ. I’d set that on a 3-hr timer and be in snoozetown before it shut off

I’ve been very bad about my exercise this year, but I always feel much better mentally when I do exercise. I’m always mindful of the research that has shown that exercise has a huge impact on good brain function, and the body benefits are almost incidental by comparison in importance.

Within reason of course. More is not always better.
Very intense exercise can put your CNS under a lot of stress.

If you can, try getting some light to medium exercise each day and have a set night time routine. Even if you have to set an alarm to remind you to go to sleep. Just fixing a fucked up sleep schedule can go a long way. Might take a week or so to start to become a routine though.

Agreed, I was writing about moderate exercise, such as 30 minutes a day, but didn’t state that.

Sorry to hear this man. Like others have suggested, I would definitely try some nice, relaxing music. I personally find classical works best. But that’s just me. If you have Pandora, there are a few different stations that are really good. Classical Relaxation Radio is my go to. I have issues with anxiety, and laying in bed listening to this for a little while really helps calm my nerves and get me in a state where my mind stops racing and I can actually fall asleep.
Also having a big glass of ice cold water on my bedside table to drink from helps too. Hope you’re able to find something that works for you. Days are so much harder to get through without getting proper rest. Sleep and drinking lots of water do some amazing things for the body/mind. Best of luck to you brother.

Had been wondering about you. Hope you managed to get some sleep.

I still haven’t figured out the insomnia. Sometimes it seems like a bit of caffeine helps me focus on nothing and fall asleep, sometimes it definitely is not helpful. Usually any more I just end up bingeing Firefly until I fall asleep. That doesn’t always work out either but at least it’s a more enjoyable way to keep myself awake than staying awake by getting mad at myself for not being able to control my thoughts that won’t let me sleep.
It’s really good to hear from you, good to know you’re still fighting. Hopefully you can find a bit better rest tonight. It’s your appointment with the new therapist today, yes?

My wife struggles with anxiety and depression and I’ve found that waves or rain noise help her sleep, there’s tons of that stuff on Spotify. And as others have suggested, exercise is great too, it’s the hardest thing in the world to start when you’re in that state but it really does make a world of difference, when I was depressed in college weightlifting was the only way I could eat or sleep.

I’m not doing that well with that. I should exercise more and eat better.

I could try that, I have some white noise in my room from my air conditioner that seems to help

Yeah I try to go to bed at the same time and should probably exercise more

Thanks music is usually too distracting for me but I have some white noise from my air conditioner

Thanks, I didn’t and think I should probably just try to stay up till tonight at this point. I have 2 leave in a couple hours for my therapy appointment anyway

Thanks, I meet with my regular therapist today at 3:30. I meet with my new psychiatrist (they can subscribe meds) on Friday.

It’s an uphill battle my dude. Recognizing it is a good step. You can do it.

As a last resort she takes melatonin supplements too, which seems better than sleeping pills but still slightly worries me as there’s enough going on with her brain chemistry already.

I’ve taken melatonin before I could try that again

Yeah, I’m still a little wary of it but I take it sometimes too and usually sleep pretty good, hers are only 3 mg too, I can’t imagine what 10mg would be like.

I took 20mg to sleep sometimes but got prescribed something different because it wasn’t keeping me asleep for very long

Yeah that’s tough, I would definitely hit the gym if possible.

Good luck! I haven’t figured out insomnia, either. A lot of folks have suggested limiting screen time (or at least getting one of those yellowy screen filters for night use) late in the day, but I haven’t noticed much of a change, TBH. I’m just tired all the time and then I can’t sleep.
It sucks, but sometimes I just lay there and do nothing until I hopefully nod off out of boredom. (Which sucks.) Or I’ll do what you did and get up and start working on stuff.
![]() 07/13/2017 at 11:18 |

Thank you, I’ve been trying to limit screen time. I usually lay in bed with the lights off and everything but it still takes hours to actually fall asleep

Hiya! Insomnia is terrible, I’m sorry you’re going through so much, you don’t deserve it.
When I cannot normally fall asleep, I usually try music or ambient noise. The noise of a box fan usually calms me down to sleep. Alternatively, I’ve also found out that a light dose of caffeine right before bed also knocks me out and keeps me from waking up through the night. No idea why but it’s been a lifesaver.
