I have a little bolt and knurled nut at work that I’ll pick up and play with some times.

The weird thing about fidget spinners for me is that the first time I saw one was in a Christmas market in Toledo, Spain. At the time, I had never heard of them before and it was about two months before they became inescapable. The result is that I blame them on the Spanish, as I tend to do with everything obnoxious in the world.

Fidget devices have been added to my university’s metalworking curriculum. It’s the perfect exercise to learn the mill and lathe on. Before we just made simple operations to get the hang of it, but now it’s a fun, cheap way to learn how to use the machines.

Doesn’t take much metal, you get to use the knurling machine, you learn about taps and dies, and you get something out of it besides the chewed up piece of aluminum I got when I went through the program.

I love that kids have no sense of irony in playing with a toy that (a) actually causes more distraction for those around them and (b) was invented primarily for kids with autism, ADHD, and other focus issues.

As my third grade teacher would have said, “Put down the toy, you’re not retarded. Pick it up again and you’re going to the principal for a paddling.”

Yeah, things have a changed a lot in 25 years. How long until we create Safe Spaces for fidget spinning and talk about how they reduce PTSD triggers in kids?

My university left me with something useful. For intro to mechanical engineering we got to make beer bottle opener keychains. We got all of the mill and lathe work plus an interesting talking piece when we went to parties. girls were so impressed when I got to talking about it.

I loved working on the lathes and mills in our university shop...I still wish I would have learned more of the CNC programming for them though

We have a CNC mill but it’s almost constantly broken. We also have a CNC router upstairs that I used to make a table last semester. Haven’t taken the actual class for CNC yet, but I plan on taking it next spring. I already know a lot of the basics of RhinoCAM, wanna learn 360, seems to be the new industry standard.
