58 was SUCH a good year for big gm cars........

Particularly when you consider what GM did the following year! I think the Chevy wore it best in ‘58, though.

i think the caddy juust sneaks it out from the chevy. but it is real close......
i would have a hard time pinning when chevy did its “BEST”........ there are SO many fun, differnet design/ styling things going on through there....... i mean, i love the bubble top look of the 59, and wings are great. 57 fins. bullet tail lights. i love the hide-away gas filler of the 56 behind the bullet tail lights. the simple no frills trim off the 57 150 coupe. dual headlights, single headlights with monster eyebrows, curves for DAYS..... they finally had decent v8,and 4speed options.......
i would end up with a hatchet job kustom sled so quick..... and thats before i get started on trucks......

It’s close between the two - I’m not a fan of any of the B-O-P cars from ‘58-60, personally - but I love the Chevy, and I like the Caddy, too.
That’s pretty tough to pick a ‘best’ for Chevy. Between 1955 and 1966, I love every single year, for various reasons. But the cleaner look of the ‘61 is my favorite - last year for the bubble top in an Impala, first year for the SS and the 409. Nirvana would be a ‘61 Impala SS bubble top with the 409. But a ‘62 Belair bubble top can be stunning with the right colors and the 409. I have a pic of a black one that Kinja won’t let me upload... :/

i like the BOP for its brand x, cheap imitation, kock off, look. the mix and match possibilities would be spectacular in terms of bolt up/light cut-n-paste madness a guy could get into.
i know what you mean about those 62.... been “casually hunting” one (or a 63) for the last year or two, but folks have gone and gotten proud of them(i cant touch a beat to death shell for much less than $2k)....... i also have a project or three ahead of it that need some attention...... one will turn up, i just gotta be patient.........

Don’t get me wrong, I love old Oldsmobiles (owned 2), Buicks (owned 1), and Pontiacs (haven’t owned - yet). I just like the ‘60-65's far better than the late 50's cars.
Cut and paste sounds good, but might be a little more difficult than you think on sheetmetal - the cars didn’t share as much as it appears, not even the frames were common across divisions (the X-frame was across all big Chevys from ‘58-64, Olds never used it at all, and Buick/Pontiac dabbled in it, for example).
The ‘62 Belair bubbletop hasn’t been a bargain for a long time, unfortunately. None of the 2 door hardtops from this era are. The Buicks and Oldsmobiles tend to run a little cheaper, and Olds made some nice engines back then, so I’ve gravitated toward them a bit (plus my first car was a ‘65 Cutlass).

1961 Chevrolet Bel Air - $2500 (Kempner)
yeah, cut-n-paste makes it at least sound simple..... it would be more of a matter of picking a tub with a nice roof and frame, and moving on from there, with the cutting and tacking. picking curves that looked apealing. but at least most of the say 58 shared MOSTLY the same greenhouse, and basic fender shape.
the older mercury lead sleds had the cut/paste down in spades.
“miss taboo” shown before it became blue.......

Miss Taboo is gorgeous - I particularly like the taillight treatment on that. No doubt it took a lot of work to get there.
The ‘61 may have some potential, but it still seems like $ for a non-runner, post sedan, with a useless (to me at least) drivetrain.

right, and that is where i have been at in my casual stalking of a 62/3. stuff that co$t plenty, with nothing but work ahead of it.
casual stalking is how i find most of my projects. i had been hunting a mid 70s chevy truck 4x4 manual. everything was either an auto, wrecked, or so badly overpriced. FINALLY found one after a not so intense 5 year hunt. price was good too. its hard to keep buy-in money just laying around though......

I bet you never knew that ALF was a fan of 58 Chevys. (The shirt was mine when I was 4.)
