According to Cargurus, right now as of this writing there are a total of 1,273 Toyobaru twins for sale in the entire country (868 FR-S, 405 BRZ). Thats an ok amount. However, of those a few have been in the hands of some dumbas’s drivers. As times goes on, will a good example of one of these cars be hard to find due to some previous owner(s) thinking he/she were Ken Block?
Of all of both models, 245 have problems. Of the ones for sale you can break down whats what:
A total of 164 have had accidents reported (121 FR-S,43 BRZ)
46 have salvage titles ( 30 FR-S, 16 BRZ)
23 have frame damage (20 FR-S, 3 BRZ)
7 have Lemon Histories (5 FR-S, 2 BRZ)
And 5 have theft histories (4 (FR-S, 1 BRZ)
What does this tell us? Well for one it looks like BRZ drivers are more responsible/lucky than FR-S drivers as all the way down you can see the BRZ having less problems than the FR-S. Will this trend of having accident ridden cars continue as the years go on? I think so, especially with how cheap these things have become. The Toyobaru twins have also seemed to bucked the JDM trend of having cars that haven’t been modded to shit being hard to find. But what do you guys think?

They already are hard to find unabused. Pretty recently I checked them out on craigslist to see where the prices were at and it was tough to find one with a clean title.

Short answer: Yes, of course.
Long answer: Jalopnik did a post a while back about an internet famous person having her track history used against her in a warranty claim. This means a lot of not-at-all internet famous people are going to be looking for cheap out-of-warranty GT86s to abuse on the track. So expect prices for used ones to rise from here on out one way or the other. This car is destined to end up with a $10k drift tax on it the same way the 240sx did.

The same thing is happening to used 350/370s and their infiniti cousins.
Theyve finally got cheap enough for the ricers to destroy them with stance, or drift.
A guy down the street has a 4dr G37 that even my neighbors who arent car people have mechanical sympathy for.
He acts like its got 15000 million hp and beats it to shit. Its got 4 different wheels on it, the body is destroyed and has likr 12 different colors on it.
He thinks hes faster than my Hellcat. If its outside, he revs by it acting like hes scaring me. If im out on my bike he tries to race me like my bike(cbr1000rr) is slower than his car.
He is just a drift ricer thru and thru. Hes like 30ish. Hes got a few gray hairs.
He wants to race me, with his NA G37. I told him at the track and hes like only pussies race on the track. Yea, i guess ill be a permanent pussy.

If they put wider tires on it I feel like that would help. Its the ultimate car for people to try to go tokyo drift on the street and the tiny tires allow it.

Maybe it’s just where I live, but I see lots of them unmodified and driven by older people. So there is a good chance there will be some out there. The problem is that those might be snapped up and modified as quick as the hit the used market.

I’ve been looking for an FR-S and this is what I’ve noticed. There all totaled or have something wrong with them. There’s one on Craigslist with a new engine presumably because he blew up the last one. It scares me to buy a used one at this point.
![]() 07/09/2017 at 23:42 |

Unmodified, sure but I’ve never seen one being driven by someone older than 40
![]() 07/09/2017 at 23:43 |

Yep. Cheap enough performance oriented car. Most of them are going to be beat.
![]() 07/09/2017 at 23:48 |

They’ll probably be the next 240SX/E36 to be honest. Not so much finding one that’s unabused, but the one that’s least abused.

cars get into accidents, FR-S BRZ aren’t immune to crappy drivers that happen to have $$$.
how many wrecked mercedes did I used to see in collision centers that were owned by old people trying to get to their country club that shouldn’t be driving anymore? too many.

Yea and most seem to hover in the mid teens.

Yea that was a few weeks ago with the creepy dealer checking her social media posting to see what was going on. But I agree with you. All those things should see prices hold firm or rise.

Yea the Z/G’s have gotten bad. I see almost daily beaten to shit early first gen 350Z’s and G35 coupes running around with shitty mods. The G37 coupes seem to be holding up well but its only a matter of time. Your neighbor sounds like a douchebag though. Ignore him. That 3.7 should be going out soon.

I usually see older men driving the BRZ unmodifed. It seems that the Subaru attracted the more mature serious drivers.
![]() 07/10/2017 at 00:06 |

That goes without saying. But they did attract, even when new, young drivers who suspiciously and surprisingly could afford a 26-32k sports coupe with drivers that want to race stop light to stoplight

I have been.
Problem is, hes a mechanic. His work shirt tells me so. So he’ll fix it when it does, only to beat it to death all over again.
I just wish he’d stop or move. His friends drive like asses thru the neighborhood. When theres a park across the street from me.

Some people aren’t secure enough to give a compliment.

Ill only race him on the track.
I mean who doesnt know every Hellcat has 700hp. I know mine makes 821hp thanks to intake, full exhaust, a pulley and tune.
Yet every time he sees me, wanna race. Like its 1999 fast and furious movie like im going just agree to it.
I just ignore him and go on about my day.

Really? I think it’s just like all other small coupes/roadsters... I haven’t seen anyone under 40 driving an unmodified S2000, Solstice/Sky, Miata, MR-2, 370Z, etc. I see a lot of older BRZ drivers here. Again, maybe it’s regional, but we have old ladies driving around in S2000's here.
![]() 07/10/2017 at 01:48 |

I’ve definitely seen that. It ma have just as much to do with the dealer network as the car itself, though.

Where I am S2ks tend to be an older crowd and Miatas are all over the place but I almost always see younger people in the Toyobarus. Not like teenagers most of the time but usually like 20s or 30s. Honestly don’t see enough MR-2s and 370Zs to judge and no Solstice/Skys period.

I own one and I’m over 50. And of the 4 I test drove, 2, including the one I bought, were owned by people older than me.
Admittedly, I was staying the hell away from beat-on ones so I probably didn’t see a representative sample of owners, but older owners do exist.

Verbal warning that you’ll call the cops the next time you interact with him?
Then when he/they inevitably act like assholes follow through with that phone call?
Surveillance cam pointed his direction to gather evidence as well?

As a previous BRZ owner, I’d guess that you’d have a good chance of finding one well cared for as its second owner. However, it’s the second/third/fourth owners that are going to destroy these cars. Their values dropped dramatically in the used market, making it easy for kids working part time jobs in school able to afford them.
Now, I’m not saying that all second/third/fourth owners will proceed to destroy the cars - many are likely gearheads too, but the chances are greater that someone with less investment in the car will treat it correspondingly.

I am 40. Drive an FRS. But my intention is to keep it indefinitely and pass it down.
I’m sure many of the twins owned by older people will be long term cars.

The cops know them VERY WELL. So that wont effect him.
Dont need evidence when half the street will say the same thing.
He aint afraid of cops. So how do you get it thru to him?
I aint doing shit to his car. Cuz I dont want it done to mine. Cuz if he did something to mine, id go to jail for sure.
Sure I could annoy the police by calling them every time he does something stupid, but chances are they won’t respond.(people in my area know my citys cops are assholes to the millionth degree)
So annoy the cops, til they find a reason to pick on me. Or just wait til he actually does hit someone or a kid and then they can finally get him.
They rev their shitty ass cars til 10pm, blare music til 10, and yet they act like they are all driving Bugattis. They stop at 10 because its when its quiet time, and they know of they do it at 1001, we’d all call the cops.
Ive considered putting tiny nails in the crack between their driveway and sidewalk to flatten them so at least for 1 day kids would be safe. But it falls back to the point above, i won’t do it cuz I dont want my shit getting fucked up.
I dont live in an HOA, so cant use that. Police are dicks. Half my neighbors are all older people. Them and me are the only younger people on the street.

Sign him up for tons of obnoxious mailing lists?
![]() 07/10/2017 at 11:58 |
|
That’s petty. Id rather watch him lose his driver license so at least he cant legally drive.
Maybe ill talk to my neighbors and see if we all cant get the police to do something. Cuz if half a street of people complain on one person, maybe they’ll do something.
![]() 07/10/2017 at 12:30 |

Yeah the ones popping up on Craigslist I’m sure are generally younger people who bought them to thrash, they haven’t been out long enough for people that picked them up as a long-term thing to be selling by now.

Well, they’re not scarce yet. 240SXs didn’t leave the factory covered in stickers, with flared fenders and removed emissions equipment.
Give it time.
