Well, it’s EAG so it’s way over priced.

That’s a really good looking longroof... Good looking interior, manual transmission, straight six, RWD, it ticks most of the good boxes. Too bad about the $130k pricetag. In the end it’s still a 22 year old wagon.

So I can slap some sense into them.

Ditto for all those people who write these kinds of ads. Unrestrained and inconsistent use of capitals, German words not in italics (and why not just “diamond black”?); Santorinblau would be the correct name for that paint code in German, so either they should spell it right in German or use its proper English translation, “Santorin i Blue”.

Of course anyone who writes “proactive” in any text, in any context should be shot and hanged, and his or her name erased from history.

This generation of M5 is the only one I quite like (the first one was probably too raw). A German-market car, however: that colour...

I’ve always wondered why BMW did not add the Hofmeister kick to these.

Yeah, that entire write up uses a whole bunch of fancy words to try to convince you that it’s a damn unicorn - but for $130k, you’d think that EAG could get rid of ‘Desciption’ and ‘Shift Knob’ and the other 900 words that were incorrectly capitalized - and if you’re going to use fancy German words, spell them right.

The E34 M5 was the first BMW that I really lusted after when I was younger - I still think it’s the best looking 5 series, period. I would love to have an M5 Touring in that color (although I hate the interior, TBH). Last of the hand-built M cars, blah blah blah - but $130k? NFW.

Interesting point on the kink - the E30 Touring models have it, and the E36 Touring sort of has it, yet this one doesn’t.

I’m sure - but most people who are wealthy didn’t get that way by paying 2x+ the value for things.

Perhaps even worse is, if you buy this car for $130k, are you going to drive it, or look at it?

I’d rather have this one - just to avoid the hideous interior in the EAG car. Plus, I could buy it, and charter a jet to fly it home, and still pocket some cash.

Yeah, I’m sure that they can hold their pinky up while sipping their tea, raving about what a fine example this was, and how EAG only has the finest specimens, yada, yada, yada, I guess.

But objectively, how is this more desirable than an E39? Yes, hand built and more rare - but the E39 is a better car in virtually everyone’s opinion (I do prefer the E34 styling, personally).

Kinja'd!!! AuthiCooper1300 > WilliamsSW

Kinja'd!!!2

I absolutely agree with you on the E34 M5. It was an extremely handsome car, and the sundry M5 appendages were quite nicely integrated (unlike the M-Technik stuff in the first M5). Of course the regular 5 series was very elegant too.

The absence of the kick (or kink) is really a big mystery. BMW attaches a lot of importance to the kidneys and the kick, so why not in this car? I wonder whether there is a structural reason: that body is likely to be less stiff than the saloon. Maybe the glass tended to pop out when taking curves at huge speeds or whatever.

The price is just idiotic.... but there will always be a gullible person with more money than brains that will bite. And the market will continue spiralling upwards, out of sheer hype.

Another point that I forgot to mention, but you alluded to - the E34 M5 is the most subtle-looking of any M car that I can think of. I like that, personally, although I’m in the minority.

Your last point is what makes me mad. I want to own one of these, and I’m in a position where it’s not unrealistic at current market prices (I currently have too many cars and other things going on to buy now) - but I feel like EAG is working to drive the market up for these things. When they get to $40-50k and up for a decent quality driver, I’m out.

Tell me about it. Around 2009 I was offered a structurally sound 4-speed SWB 911T for 10,000 euro - and even then the seller would probably have gone down to 8,500-9,000. I wondered whether I should just buy it and put it away until I could really devote time and serious money to it, but I really had too many projects going on at the time and passed.

That car was ultimately sold a year later for 8,500 euro and ended up in effing Monaco . I think it was going to be butchered to make yet another R or S/T or T/R replica for club rallying.

Pending a lottery win that was my last chance ever to buy a 911.

Ugh - I’m sure that’s painful to think about. I feel like I may be in that same window right now for both the E34 and E39 M5's. Buy soon, or regret it later, when the prices are to the moon.

Some collectors just buy stuff and let it rot in their garages for decades. Once I met a fine gentleman who had an 2.7 RS. He told me about a “collector” who among many other interesting cars owned a competition Stratos (most likely a Monte or Corse winner: I mean the car, not the model) and had it tucked away in an underground garage for years. Covered in dust, no air in the tyres etc.

The guy with the RS had inherited from his father a whole bunch of special Porsches (even some competition ones with “proper” provenance) and realised that if he tried to keep them all they would all slowly die. So he sold most of the lot and with the money he got he kept the RS and a couple more in tip-top condition.

He was adamant he would never become a “collector” like the other guy with the Stratos.

I know exactly what you’re talking about as two family friends are the same way as they get older and their collections grow. They really only drive 2 of the cars and the others just sit forever it feels like. They’re in a climate controlled garage and maintained, but seriously how long until the maintenance slips or everything just rots because they’re never driven. Before getting to know them better I wanted a collection too, now I see it like you do and that I would rather have a few I’d actually drive and enjoy then having so many they sit there to rot or that they’re so valuable they’re never actually driven.

The E39 is very competent indeed, but isn’t it a big gamble in terms of mechanical complexity and too many gizmos and sundry electronic bits that given time can go wrong? The E34 would be relatively straightforward in comparison.

Besides, apart from stellar performance, it is just “a BMW”. The M5 is a real M car.

At least those are kept in a nice environment. That Lancia had no such luck. Even becoming a museum car would be better.

I imagine the guy is/was not into Lancias or rallying or whatever and just snapped it up at a great price when it went on sale decades ago.

Yes, your last point is the biggest argument for the E34 as a collectible, to be sure.

And it’s also true about the complexity of the E39 v. the E34. The S62 engine has a few known issues, though, that can be addressed - and frankly, in comparison to the E60 M5, it’s a dream in terms of complexity/reliability. It’s all about where you want to draw the line - seems like BMW adds an exponential layer of complexity with each generation. The E39 is a sweet spot for a lot of people, and the E34 is, too. It’s a bit harder to argue for the E60, unless you’re a very patient person... :)

Most people call it kink, but some call it kick. I prefer kick.

Of course it is not exclusive to BMW – it has never been – but now they consider it is part of their identity.

By the way, that car is gorgeous.
