In and Out is good, but Five Guys has way more of a nationwide presence.

So? Papa John’s and Subway won awards, and they’re crap too.

Hot take: I absolutely love Five Guys. Their cheeseburgers and fries are great.

EDIT: Also, you can’t complain about free peanuts.

That’s absolutely what brought them the top spot. I don’t know the exact metric but part of it is brand familiarity.

We’ve tried 5guys a few times - not my jam, and kinda pricey. I like In-N-Out but we don’t have them up here so I only get it when traveling. We have a local chain I like better than both - Kidd Valley, http://kiddvalley.com/ . Great burgers, awesome sides, (excellent onion rings and ‘shrooms and spectacular garlic fries,) great shakes and a solid fish sandwich too.

Considering In-N-Out is only in like 6 states and you can find Five Guys everywhere (even in Wales), if you base the sample size on the entire country this result isn’t noteworthy.

If you limit the sample size to only states where both companies do business, I’m sure you’d see different numbers.

I can put away some fast food if the mood strikes, but dare I say that Five Guys sells meals that are just too large? I hate cold fries, so I usually eat my fries first, and by the time I’m done with even a small order my burger is usually cold.

This might not be a problem if I were to inhale my food, but that’s not my style. I prefer to savor a smaller portion than to pig out on a larger one. Even when I order a small meal it’s too much food and costs too much.

Shake shack costs as much as just going to a brewery and getting a burger, fry and beer. And their shakes are just as shitty as In and Out.

Believe me I’ve eaten a lot of each. I enjoy them both.

But since the nearest In N Out is 791 miles away and the nearest Five Guys is 4.3 miles away I like In N Out better.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

grew up with In-N-Out, so it’s always been meh to me. But then a Five Guys came to town and I tried it, and I wanted In-N-Out. Five Guys is just stupid expensive for what you don’t get. The burgers are mediocre at best, especially being small frozen patties, and the fries are nothing special at all.

But thanks to Five Guys I’ve come to appreciate In-N-Out much more. I love how fresh everything is. The lettuce is so crispy you can hear it, and the tomatoes are so fresh and delicious. And getting the fries animal style helps to make them less boring.

No In-N-Outs where I live, but I was in Cali a few weeks ago so we had to give it a try the night before we flew back. It was stupid busy - like no where to sit, drive through line out the parking lot & down the road busy. That’s fine, we didn’t feel like venturing farther away from the hotel to find somewhere else at 9pm. Summary: The wait wasn’t terrible - probably 20 minutes, the burgers were good, shakes were fine, and the fries.... were probably the worst I’ve had from a fast food joint. They were awful. Hard, absolutely no flavor, not even worth eating. Maybe that’s not typical, but it seems like they had to have been fresh considering how crowded it was? I dunno, I just don’t get why people talk up In-N-Out so much, it was mediocre at best.

I had I&O when I went to San Diego last year.

I was underwhelmed.

Took far too long for being mostly empty on a weekday afternoon.

The burger itself tasted like a mash-up of Steak ‘n Shake and White Castle.

Animal Style didn’t live up to the hype.

5 Guys is notably overpriced for what it is, but they are tasty. That said, they’re not far off from Jack in the Box and Wendy’s, and, given the price disparity and turnaround times (e.g. on a lunch break) I’d be more likely to go to the other two anyway.

That said, I went to Red Robin a few weeks ago and had one of their limited-release bacon cheeseburgers. It was one of the best burgers I’ve had since going to a farm-owned restaurant with grass-fed local beef that was so good it almost made me want to cry.

Agreed. I’d eat Little Caesar’s before papa john’s. Of course, Little Caesar’s doesn’t taste like ass and upset my digestive system.

Subway’s good, and definitely demonstrates how volume can keep prices reasonable. I personally gravitate towards Penn Station, Jersey Mike’s, Firehouse Subs, Lenny’s (which might be closed?) and Jimmy John’s, even though they’re about $1-2 more for an near-equivalent large sandwich.
