So have a 10 hour drive from Texas to Iowa coming up tomorrow, with the return trip on Monday — my “navigator” is my 16 yo son, and we are going to Iowa for a youth triathlon. My wife told me to take her Pathfinder — I declined and decided to drive the Mustang (in case you were wondering, his team has a trailer and takes the bike and related gear for us). I’m not sure how this is going to work out, but what the heck. So what kind of mileage do you think I’m going get?

[ UPDATE ] Well, with a fair amount of in-town driving, I ended up averaging 20.1 mpg for the entire trip. I noticed two things dramatically affected my mileage. First, of course, was speed. My average mpg noticeably dropped (for those few seconds I was) over 80 mph. Second, I averaged about 1 mpg less on 91 octane versus 93 octane. Because 93 is so available in North Texas and I never put premium gas in rental cars when I travel, I didn’t realize the number of stations selling 93 octane was so limited other places. In Des Moines, I was able to search for and find some. But on the highway, it was hit or miss (and mostly miss). Perhaps my driving or the terrain could have caused a bit of that difference, although I don’t really think that is true.

Edit: I don’t know why Kinja is rotating my picture. Sigh.

I’m going to guess anywhere from 19-22 mpg.

Is it a cool old pathfinder or a new minivan pathfinder? Sweet mustang by the way, not sure about the highway gearing but maybe 20mpg?

If it’s a ‘cool’ old Pathfinder, the Mustang will use less gas anyways. Source: I have a 2005. I say Mustang all the way!

Well you *can* get 20mpg. But your right foot will get you.....carry the one....divide by the gear ratio.........aaaaaand

None.

You will get no MPGs.

There is no economy, only tire smoke and engine noise.

Again, the car as a machine is capable of 20+ mpg. But the human operating it cannot. This is fact. It is what absolute power does - it corrupts absolutely.

I have a 2003 and I agree, anything would get better mileage than the pathfinder. Mustang all the way but I find the pathfinder to be a really comfy road trip car anyways.

Amen to all of that! I’ve put 168k on mine and the longest trip I recall was Chicago to southern Alabama - great, comfy road trip car, but don’t expect to get 20 mpg out of it. Ever.

Nah, I think it’s a ‘13. We’ve taken it on this trip before when the whole family has gone and it’s fine. Fine, not fun.

I got about 24 MPG in a 5.0 with 3.73 gears doing 80 across Texas.

So, probably something close to that?

Who cares? You two are going to look badass when the Mustang pulls up to the curb.

Hope you have fun. :D

Comfort shouldn’t be a problem. I did a 13 hour drive in that generation with the cloth seats and didn’t have any complaints.

Fuel economy is going to depend on your right foot ;)

I don’t know if the Recaros that Roush puts in are going to as comfortable as the stock seats. But we’ll find out.

And yes, I think I regret posting this. If I get good mileage, I’m going to hear that I didn’t drive fast enough! lol

What do you get normally? I’m about 14.8 with a mix of local highway and in-town driving.

I’ve owned it for like 4 days, so I don’t know yet. I have only filled it up 3 times so far, first was topping off whatever was in it when I bought it so I don’t know if the trip computer was accurate, 2nd time was the aforementioned 24 MPG, 3rd time was about 3/4s of a tank on the highway and the last 1/4 in town and it came out to 21 mpg.

I think my dad saw somewhere just north of 20MPG’s in his 2015 RS3 when traveling to pick up my mom’s 350. In which she never even saw 20. I guess it will all really come down too your right foot! Comfort shouldn’t be a huge issue however. I’ve been in that generation for about half as long as that trip and still felt fine. I would just hope your exhaust doesn’t drone too much.
