Somoene once asked Mr. Regular, “Hey! Do you want to drive my manual R8 V10?” Years later, Doug had to seek out an automatic R8 with the V8...

Say what you will about either of them, but at least Mr. Regular does his homework. Doug seems to be under the impression he’s reviewing an older R8 (he’s not), and also said all R8s had the V8 (they didn’t).

There was a lot wrong with this one. The R8 was also definitely not the first car with LED DRLs.

I am disappointed in his quirk pointing out skills. He failed to even notice the scalloped brake disks.

yeah that is odd, almost like the Dougster is trolling oppo nerds, (myself included...) But he is right in that this is the car that made the R8 successful - auto so it’s easy to drive and broadens the market pool but still sexy/exotic at a price point that is reachable to the folks that would buy one.

For the first year, they most certainly all had V8s. The V10 didn’t come out until 2008.

What was it? I can’t think of one before the R8. The C6 Audi S6 had a strip down below the headlights but not integrated into the headlight.

My thought was this, or one of the other “Angel Eye” BMWs.

Edit: Upon further research, I don’t think the BMW halo lights were on all the time. The R8 does, in fact, get to claim the first LED DRLs. Lexus (the 2008 LS 600 L) gets to claim the first all-LED headlight. Also, the 2008 LS 600 L is just an insanely pretty car and I want one.

While we’re criticizing Doug, though, do you remember people hating on the sideblade? I recall everyone loving it...that’s why it’s so rare to see a body-colored sideblade.

Even if they were on BMWs at the time, it was pretty specifically referring to the LED strip that is part of just about every current headlight design. Pretty sure it was the R8. Angel eyes definitely created some trends as well.

And yeah, I recall some sideblade hate, at best it was “controversial”. I dig it, it’s aged well.
