What I used to do
If they offer me a job, it’s going to be very hard to turn down. I probably should turn any potential offer down, I’m not sure I can do that to myself any more.

I’ve always been told to remember: “You left for a reason.”
Works with cars, jobs, cities, and partners.

Cash talks. Come back but for a premium. I’ll take the Pagani to the yacht after I play Augusta today type premium.

I was a frac field engineer.

Yeah, I looked at oil this morning and was like I’m glad I’m out of that. At the same time, I was looking at my old work jacket hanging in my closet and was like I kinda want to go back. I don’t know what I’m going to do.

How stable is Fracking right now? I know its way down from what it once was. How happy were you before? I know that no amount of money can make up for me being miserable 45+ hours a week for the next 25 years of my life.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 12:45 |

Yeah, I’d really want to know what they’d offer me. Regardless, it’d still be a lot more than I make now, but the quality of life might be worse. I really don’t know what I’m going to do.

I got laid off, so it wasn’t my choice to leave. I will say I was thinking about quitting at the time I got laid off. It’s just going to be hard to turn down the money.

45+ hours per week? Try like 60-80 hours per week. I’m thinking it’s actually more stable now because they’ve had to live with low oil prices for so long. Like my old company is about at the strength they were when oil was $90/bbl. I was super miserable, but it was starting to get better when I got laid off. I wouldn’t be in the field forever either, so there is a light at the end of the table. I’m not sure the money is worth going back though, maybe if I wouldn’t have to move.

Good deal, my FIL is a fluids engineer, spends most of his work time down in New Orleans.

yeah no thank you. I like my cushy 45 hours a week. Sometimes I work more, but only if I have hot projects. I’m sure I make a lot less, but I am happy with where I’m at.

If it were me, there’d have to be a REALLY compelling reason to go back.
It took you forever to find your current job. And didn’t you say you were miserable in Texas anyway, or am I making that up? And who’s to say you won’t be looking for work again 12 months from now?
Money is nice, but so is not hating your life., I’d stay where you are now.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 13:22 |

All of that is true. I really don’t think I’ll go back, but it’s going to be so hard to say no. I do at least want to hear their offer.

Retire early on a sailboat in the Caribbean? That’s what I’d do.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 13:28 |

Then what’s to stop them laying you off a second time around? What guarantee do you have?
![]() 07/05/2017 at 15:52 |

Money is nice, but before long you’re going to want stability. I’m 28 now, married, and I want to buy a house. I don’t care how much money I’m paid if I’m a) going to hate the work and b) might lose the job tomorrow. Stability is priceless for me.

How about getting an offer, then showing that to your current employer as a way to get more $$$ out of them?
Best case, you stay where you are and get paid more. Worst case, they fire you, but you already have a job offer so you’re not unemployed.

It would all depend on the offer. I know when they transferred some engineers back in 2015 they were basically untouchable for a certain period of time. I’d want some guarantee in writing, probably of at least 2 years.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 18:31 |

There are a lot of negatives that would go along with going back. Them guaranteeing a period where I couldn’t lose that job would be must before I’d accept an offer.

Only problem is that I’d also have to be ready to hand in my resignation letter if they didn’t give me more, which I’m not sure I’m willing to do. I said I wasn’t going to chase money now. However, I still want to hear what they’re going to offer.

Yeah, I wouldn’t settle for anything less, company I used to work for laid a guy off twice within a year. I soon quit for various reasons, but the way they treated employees was a big factor.

It would take a very good offer for me to go back.

I would recommend reading and thinking before you play that card
![]() 07/06/2017 at 11:41 |

That’s a good move. The question is, though, what does going back there do for you in the long run? The money is great, but does it further specialize you into a field that you won’t be working in in a few years? If you aren’t going to stay in the oil industry, it may be worth sticking with a lower paying job in a field you’re likely to stay in long term.

I grew up in a pretty wealthy community. While there were exceptions, on the balance the rich ones were the most miserable bunch of *^##-{#%^**# you could ever meet. No amount of stuff is worth being miserable for.
![]() 07/06/2017 at 12:23 |
|
Yeah I know. It’s more I’m still not happy here, so maybe I could go back and fix what I did wrong last time. I’m probably going to stay where I am, but they might make me a deal I can’t refuse, like you can live where you are now and we’ll fly you out to the job every week, and we can’t lay you off for at least 2 years. I doubt it’d be that good, but it’s worth at least hearing their offer.
![]() 07/06/2017 at 12:24 |

I’m really not sure what it does for me, I’m really going to have the think about the whole picture.
![]() 07/06/2017 at 12:27 |

Gotta get an offer before I think about how I’m gonna play it.
![]() 07/06/2017 at 14:09 |

I see. Sounds like you’ve got some work to do on yourself then. I wish you the best in figuring out what’s missing for you.

I’m working on it, it just takes time to start over in a new place and I think that’s why I’m still not happy. I felt like the pause button got hit on my life in April 2016, and it’s been hard getting it started again.

That’s totally understandable. At least you’re aware enough to realize you need to deal with it. That’s a good start.
