They inspired me to get adblock plus because regular adblock seemed to be having difficulty with the “sponsored links by taboola” banner ads that showed up after I refreshed to get away from the popup.
Seriously guys. Have ads that don’t slow your page loading by crazy amounts, and don’t have autoplay ads, and I’ll whitelist you. Until then, I’ll be using an adblocker.

I don’t know how anyone uses this site without serious ad blocking. It’s basically unusable.

I had completely stopped going to the fp on my phone until I was informed you could have adblockers on phones

Exactly. This is bullshit:
That’s 1263x723 of a 1280x1024 screen wasted with one ad.

Have you tried Ghostery?

I just did a test: with uBlock the FP loaded in about a second, with it disabled it took
17 seconds
for the entire page to load (about 15 seconds of that was waiting for all the ad scripts to execute). I get that websites have to sell ads to keep the lights on but they could at least put some effort into building the website so it doesn’t run like a freshman computer science major’s first Javascript coding assignment.
On the plus side now you don’t have to see all the ‘dildo in a tree’ ads that are surely selling tree dildos to the denizens of Jalopnik by the thousands...

I haven’t, I think my dad likes that one though. I’ll look into it too

ublock origin

uBlock Origins is another good one if you’re on a slower computer or internet connection and want a less resource-intensive program. Plus you can individually block elements of a website (even non-ads like the sidebar) to get a really clean UI.

I just lost all patience and went whole hog. I set up Pi-Hole on my Raspberry Pi, which does network level adblocking. Then I just removed the adblock plugin from my computers.
Now I dont see ads, and I dont get a popup discouraging me either!
Also, pages load faster, and I can black or whitelist domains as needed. It took some futzing around to get everything I use regularly to work, but no worries now. I had to fix Google Drive, and whitelist stuff for XBox Live, but Playstation seems to work just dandy, along with everything else I frequent.
I also have some pretty sweet network utilities running now, along with a DDNS so I can access things remotely.

I don’t know what a lot of that means, but it sounds cool

Adchoice?

The funny thing is that their ad revenue will drop if they keep people with ad blockers from using the site as the people that create the majority of the content that bumps their search results are the regulars that must use ad blockers to use the site. Cutting us off is foolish as it’ll destroy their page ranking while simultaneously reducing activity, which reduces ad revenue because they can’t sell their visitor and page view numbers.

I feel bad. Honestly I do. I know how the world works and I’ll go out of my way to buy stuff from people who sponsor my favorite content (I just put penzoil in the truck) but this has honestly driven me to use the ad blocker. I took this screenshot from an article on mobile. It was completely useless. There was no content to read, just ad after ad. Once Jalopnik announces a change in the forced content, I’ll be happy to remove it. I also cannot stand the auto-play ads. Especially if one pops up on mobile. That’s my fucking data you are draining. You may not use it to force me to watch a video.

It’s not for the uninitiated, but it isn’t complicated to get going.
