It seems like the gaskets on both sides of the cam covers are failing. Which isn’t the end of the world, provided that’s all it is. Still, considering that I had the tensioners done two years ago and that replacing the gaskets is a mandatory part of that service, I’m a bit suspicious of my mechanic at the moment. It may be time to find another Jag mechanic.

Nah, that’s just Jag’s self-applying anti-corrosion system. Coats everything under the hood in 10w30 to prevent rust, the older the car gets, the more oil it squirts to compensate. 8-10 years after production, the power steering system usually kicks in for an extra layer of protection.

This. Honestly the only bits on my Spitfire that weren’t rusty were where the gearbox was chucking oil out ;)

It’s also an integral part of the patented ‘Continual Oil Change Mechanism’ which ensures that you constantly have a supply of new engine oil, replacing tired old contaminated oil that leaks out of specially designed gasket inconsistencies ;)

Yeah, but the difference is that my car actually needs that stuff to stay inside it to continue running.

To the Jag’s supreme credit, it uses about a quart between oil changes, although I think it’s getting worse. I noticed it because it’s started smoking as the oil burns off.

[dismissive hand wave]

What does it even mean to run, when you think about it?

Tensioners plural? Is the 6 or the 12?

Valve cover gasket(s) ought to be self-doable.

8. There are two primary tensioners and two secondary. Helpfully, they’re all made of plastic.

That’s my thought, but I also have transmission issues to sort (it needs a flush at the very least), and I’m thinking of finding another mechanic, so this is a nice, simple job I can use to evaluate if the shop is any good.

All of the reliability of the 12, with the smooth power of the 6. It’s the Jaguar way.
