Kinja'd!!!

I went to go do the brakes on the Miata this morning and found that I had accidentally ordered 94-02 calipers for my 1991. I also have a performance brake kit (90-93) with EBC Green / slotted rotors. Now my options are somewhat limited if I want to finish this weekend. I have two choices

Option 1: OEM-spec 94-02 conversion

Use the ‘94-’02 rotors

Find ‘94-’02 rotors, pads, and clips at Autozone or Orielly

Return or sell the 90-93 EBC Greens / slotted rotors

Option 2: Up-rated 90-93

Use the 90-93 EBC Greens / slotted rotors

Find ‘90-93 calipers at Autozone or Orielly (I have cores)

Return or sell the ‘94-’02 calipers (they’re new, not re-manufactured)

Anyone have any ideas on which would give better braking performance?

Do the newer calipers fit on the old mounting bits?

Is there a difference in pistons on the calipers? Or is it a mounting location/rotor size change?

Yep. Just need the bigger disc, bigger pad, and bigger clips.

Far as I’ve read, it’s mostly just a size change to accommodate a 1" larger disc.

Just how different are the 90-93 and 94+ brakes? What would you have to swap? How involved is it? In some cases, it’s just the pads, rotors, and calipers. In other cases, you’ll need new hubs, lines, brackets, and other shit and can be very involved.

Slotted rotors are useless. Blanks are better. The best rotors to get are Centric Premium or Wagner E-shield. My suggestion is Napa Eclipse calipers or Cardone Ultra. They have a coating to stop the rust. Napa’s coating is black, while the Ultra is silver; they are otherwise the exact same Cardone reman calipers.

I think I’ve decided on doing the upgrade - mostly due to parts availability. The 94-02 calipers I have are from MossMiata and have a pretty good silver anti-rust coating.

It’s not very involved. Just pads, rotors, calipers, and clips/springs.

The only real question was whether an upgraded pad was going to be worth more than the extra inch of surface. I’m thinking I’ll take the surface area and it’s not hard swap in some EBC pads later.

Cool! Yeah, if it’s that easy, then upgrading does make more sense. Now, can your wheels clear the extra inch?

I suggest taking the mighty car mods approach: if you’ve gotta fix/replace, might as well upgrade

According to the internet, which is never wrong, my wheels will clear. I got the new discs and pads. So far, so good. The only modification was to the shield - had to straighten the rounded edges. Otherwise, all good!
