I got a chance to drive the M variant and I walked away unimpressed.

It’s like driving an e46 m3 that has a far too stiff suspension and likes to understeer. The performance is no better than an e46 m3, and might even be lacking in some regards.

I badly want to find one of these. I’d buy it and daily drive the crap out of it. Then I’d go single turbo on my 335i and turn it into a track car.

I test drove a used Z3M and also walked away unimpressed. Wasn’t very powerful and didn’t handle very well either but that might have been partly because of abuse. I felt like the M badge was out of place on it though. Didn’t have the spark, if that makes any sense. Felt like it was just BMW throwing some loose parts out of the M bin and called it a day.
