Monorails seem like they should be a good idea. Get the benefits of an elevated railway without the noise and darkness of a traditional one, and at a cost that’s far less than a subway. Doesn’t seem like there are that many successful systems though (I guess there are some in Japan? And of course Wuppertal ).
