The advantages of the, shall we say, current Toyota Sequioa over the lovely new Nissan Armada? I’m sure there are some, but other than model preference or brand loyalty I can’t figure out what they are.

Also, while we’re at it, why does Car & Driver put the GLS in the same category as the Armada/Suburban/Expedition instead of the QX80/Navigator/Escalade it more clearly competes against.

If it were my money I would by the Y62/Armada over the Sequoia. Three reasons.

1. The Toyota is massively dated inside and out, even if it is only a little older than the Armada

2. The value is so much better on the Japanese built [minus the engine] Nissan

3. I hate saying, typing or writing the word “Sequoia”

It’s also more attractive inside and out, tows more, goes faster, and uses less gas.

FYI - I wouldn’t call the Armada new either. Its been on sale since 2010, only 2 years newer than the Toyota.

If it were my money I’d probably get nothing in that segment, but if I had to it’d be a Tahoe or Suburban tbh. They pretty much win the full-size SUV game hands down.

True, but there the argument can at least be made that the Sequioa could be needed for someone who is primarily towing, as it tows something like 900lbs more.

in fact...if you could live without the new transmission and a few interior updates...and a whale/barn appearance...a lightly used QX would be a fantastic bargain.

I actually don’t mile the looks of the QX56, it was just the facelift that accompanied the name change to QX80 that made it so awfully hideous.

Sequoia old. I still prefer the first gen to the 2nd gen, speaking strictly of appearance. I like the Armada, even though it’s nearly as old. Keeping it forever? I’d trust the Sequoia to last that long. Keeping it a few years, I’d pretend to take the Expedition, but probably buy the Armada.

The Yukon with the heavy duty towing package gets you another 1000 pounds over the Sequoia without cracking 50 grand if trailering is that important to the buyer.

I really like the Armada, but I’m not a huge fan of a lot of the interior appointments. I also don’t see why they can’t just make the Pathfinder the same thing as the Aramada.

The QX is really, really ugly...but I rented one for a weekend trip and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it. Soooooooo good on the highway.

One major thing that the Sequoia has over the Armada is cross compatibility with the brand’s full size truck offerings.

Whereas the only things that the Titan and Armada share are likely just mechanicals, the Sequoia is directly based on the 2007-13 Tundra, even sharing some body panels, like the hood, headlights, front fenders, grille, front doors, and side mirrors. I have the feeling the windshield and front bumpers are interchangeable, too.

The two models also share the same dashboard, and you can literally take the entire steering column from a Tundra and put it in a Sequoia, steering wheel and all.

Basically, it’s literally a Tundra SUV, putting it in similar company to an early 00's Chevrolet Tahoe and Silverado, while the Armada is like going between a Cadillac Escalade and a Chevrolet Silverado for parts.

There’s also that Toyota reliability, which means it will easily outlast an Armada, which could more easily be compared to a Land Rover product on reliability.

But, of course...the one you really want is a Land Cruiser.
