What would you stuff in this little tortilla of joy?
A 4 cylinder turbo diesel? Something from Briggs & Stratton? Just cut the floor out and go Flinstone style?

First thing that came to mind was a a 7.3l Power Stroke. But I think the 5 cyl off the old Colorado would be rad.

13b from 90s rx7.. because fuck torque.

4 cylinder turbo diesel that cannot or will not die with a 6 speed manual. All of the low gearing for offroading and can still get highway mpg.

I keep thinking that would be a fantastic motor to drop into either a Nash Metropolitan or Crosley. I’ve done quick searches but can’t seem to find them sold through anyone that doesn’t use vehicle VIN for inventory searches.

Ya I figured it’d have to be a from a wrecked car.
I found this one on eBay I wonder if itd be cheaper to get one from Europe since it’s used more over there.

I hadn’t thought about that. I wonder how easy it would be to arrange shipping on one from overseas.

Honda J35Y with the 6-speed manual out of a wrecked Accord.
278hp, 252 lb-ft of torque
Enough to make it fun to drive, but also a reliable daily driver.
Then, I’d put on some wheels from a late model second gen ZR2.
And the spare tire cover...or spare wheel cover, in this case.
Or, I could go JDM on the outside and swap on some Mazda Proceed Levante parts (grille, spare cover, badging), but still go with the ZR2 wheels. A hodgepodge, of sorts.

I took a glance the UK engines are practically the same cost off eBay so shipping wouldn’t be worth it. The Germans must like them cause they were listed for 1500 euros on eBay.de

That stinks but really isn’t too surprising since they haven’t really been out long. My local pick and pull sets up waiting lists you can get onto incase something comes in; maybe I’ll ask to be on the call list for one. I can’t imagine there are too many people trolling junkyards for one.

Nice! You’ve put some thought into this....

That looks kind of heavy.... will the rear wheels still touch the ground? I love it though. My dad was a diesel mechanic, I love the smell of sooty exhaust.

I predicted this response.

That’d be a great, light motor. Probably wouldn’t even need an engine hoist.....

This is the correct answer

i would put a rotary, and stack 3 old chevy tuck 4 speed transmissions nose to tail, and have an old gear to gear transfer case. 6.5 *6.5*6.5 (274.625) *2* diferential, say 3.42 = the crawl ration in around 1878.435.........
basically getting a small marlin crawler..........

Bonus star for most original answer. What about one for each wheel?

(Does math on label of beer bottle...) so I’m coming up with approximately 7 mph and 9mpg at 12,000 rpm. Awesome! I would need to factor in the cost of extra oil and earplugs.

its enough gear to pull a house off of its foundation....... the fun thing about that kind of reduction, is the control that you can have when going over obstacles. luckily you can always put them into 1:1 and move along at a decent pace..
this guy is puttering along at a 500:1 ratio.....
wake me up when 1800-ish gets to the other side of the obstacle.........

I think this might be the answer:

I was thinking hybrid, but why not full EV? Take out the back seats to make room for batteries....

Sure! 9.6 liters from 8 cylinders for around 800hp. Yeah, could be fun.

I love how it’s basically just idling up the hill.
![]() 06/10/2017 at 21:25 |

the malrin crawler is one of the originators.
basically with enough gear ratio you almost dont even need a driver......

Part of me really likes this - the idea that you don’t need a huge, high revving engine blowing tons of smoke to actually get the job done. Sure, it might not look fast, but I bet it’s a heck of a lot more effective than some of those guys flooring their rigs to get up a hill.
![]() 06/10/2017 at 22:26 |

yeah, the huge high rpm engine is cool.
i just like the refined, easy on parts, low rpm aproach too. torque multipliction is an amazing thing.
i am reminded of this guy...... not exactly a small or low budget build, but you can hear that the thing has some deep gears in it. and it just outright dominated a course with those monster tires, (big tires make obstacles small)......

fit a buick V6 3.8l with a 5-speed manual.
problem solved.
