I think it’s funny that Nissan and Lexus both arrived at a similar idea at the same time.
Although on the RX it’s one piece of glass over a bunch of not-actually-a-window space.

The point is, there is significant structural metal under that panel. They can either cover it in the standard steel/aluminum or they can use black plastic or glass to make it look like the roof is floating.
