Yeah, that looks like a surprisingly smooth landing.

How fucked is an aircraft after landing like that?

When Trump says he’s going to replace you with an even better plane, believe him.

Depends on how well the landing is executed. In this case, according to the article, it’s nothing more than a little cosmetic damage (pending a thorough inspection, I’m sure).

Yeah, I wonder if it’s actually easier to set something this large down than say, an F-15.

Its hard to say, depends on the plane, but I can find one example of a plane that had a comparable landing and flew again.

#savetheC5 That is one of the newly retrofitted Super Galaxy variants too.

Good job to the aircrew. Saved it!

I worked on C-5s in the Air Force Reserve and the landing gear was a nightmare to maintain, though the issues that I recall were all related to the mains and not the nose gear. Great hulking behemoths of aircraft and even though I am a lover of aircraft, the C-5 is not a lovable airplane.

The fact it has extra maingear probably helped keep it stable. To heavy to balance, but with some skill I can imagine landing it flatish (a la the B-52), and just holding the nose up until you were slow enough that you couldn’t keep it off the ground anymore.

I’ll give you an experiential pass, since you worked on them, but I absolutely love the C-5. I’ve seen them up close many times and I’m still in awe every time.

Meh, a little speed tape and bondo and it’ll be ready to fly...

Here’s the pilot in action. He did a pretty good job defending it from damage with that landing.

Cool. My favorite hauler is the C-130J Herkey Bird. Love ‘em.

Fake news! No one “forced” it to land. They could have crashed it if they wanted to.

In Spain?

Anyone have eyes on Torchinsky? Are there blackened remains of canned hams under that fuselage?

I do love people’s reactions when talking to aviation maintainers about their birds.
I was a Harrier mechanic, and I all the time hear “The one from True Lies?! Wow, that must have been really cool! Was it fun to work on?”

They’re oohing and aahing and I’m trying to not say “lawndart,” “whistling-shitcan,” or “the dominant figure in a horribly abusive relationship that took young adults and squeezed happiness, drive and health from their bodies, leaving broken husks wandering base muttering ‘fuck this noise’ and yelling ‘SPEAK UP!’ to anyone who speaks at less than a scream.”

I’m surprised that as a former Harrier mechanic, your response to a question is anything other than, “What?”

I haven’t flown in a great many aircraft, but C130s were by far my favorite. The pilots were genuinely having way too much fun, and usually at their passengers’ expense. Lol
