From sometime in the ‘70s until about 2 years ago, my dad owned a red ‘63 with black interior, powershift automatic, 3.73 gears and the R2 supercharged 289. The last few years he owned it he just go so disgusted with it never running just right. I don’t know if I’ll ever truly forgive him for selling it... Or the white on turquoise’64 Buick Wildcat convertible he sold just before that.
Fun fact: since Studebaker was the US distributor for Mercedes at the time of the Avanti’s birth, the Avanti used Mercedes’ door latch mechanisms. The biggest thing that will always stick out in my mind about that Avanti is how unbelievably buttery-smooth those door latches were.
