The steelies tell me that this is the GTI’s cheaper cousin, the Golf GT.

Regardles, it’s nice to see ‘80s VWs still on the road.

EDIT: I see that this wasn’t taken in the US, so my comment may not be applicable...

Front tire looks brand new. Back tire might be original.

Yeah, a working, near-stock 80s VW in the US is like seeing Bigfoot. In Europe, it’s like seeing and old man out for a walk.

That looks like a clone of my mk2 Golf, wheels and color included. Which were all stock, which I know for sure as it’s a 1-family car. I have a ‘special edition’ base model from 1991 with the 54 hp 1.3i engine.

I only retired mine (in 2013) because I wanted something more comfortable and faster. With 290k km iirc it was in perfectly driveable condition still, probably would’ve passed a new MOT with few problems. Very reliable and trouble free car with comically cheap parts. Still own the Golf, it’s in a shed somewhere.

It certainly said GTI on the grille!

Some were very basic.

GTIs in the US were top of the line, but I can certainly see where there might be cheaper versions in other countries. I’d prefer mine in its most minimal form. Lightweight equals better.

I don’t know if you received the Golf GT, but over here it was a simpler, more stripped down GTI without all of the goodies but more than just a trim package (like the weak-ass ‘Rabbit S’).
