Why do I keep posting these late? Cause I’m super busy that’s why!
This is what my engine looks like now. the painter’s tape is labels so I dont forget anything
Ye old buckete o’ fluid. clearly it could use changed. still red/pink but any amount was more of a brownish maroon.
Overall there wasn’t much debris in the fluid. It was a little sparkly, but I am pretty sure that is normal.
My radiator looks pretty O.K.. all the fittings came out nice, which is actually a big surprise. Interesting design note:
This entire monster is my A/C condenser. Does it really need to be that big? I am thinking about just leaving it in there to protect my rad from stones and such.
So the fluids are drained. tomorrow or wednesday I plan on pulling the engine out. still got a small number of transmission lines to disconnect, disconnect the fuel lines, and disconnect the power steering pump. then hopefully I can get that A/C bracket off, and use the bolt hole for the lift.
the dog was not amused.

Yeah, the sparkly bits are probably normal.
No magnet?

None that I know of. Don’t they normally put the magnet on the drain plug? Because I don’t have one of those either. GM, those cheap bastards.

From what I’ve seen (in my very limited experience), magnets seem to be more common than drain plugs, so without knowing quite what to expect, I was kinda surprised not to see a magnet in that pan. Maybe that’s normal, though.

Looks like I will have to add it to the list of parts to order. I can’t imagine it is an expensive item.

If it was my car, I’d totally pimp out that pan with both a magnet and a drain plug. Sew fawncy!

Yeah, but it’s my car, and I have run out of money.

I need to save because this thing needs tires, Various lines/hoses, and I need to put subframe connectors on it stat. can’t even think about stuff like that.

How many miles were on the fluid?

Completely unknown. I would have figured the PO changed it when he got the car but I guess not.

Ah, the 70's, were every A/C component was 30000% bigger than it needed to be.
I have the same conundrum with my car, as I want to return it to having functional A/C

Knowing what I know now, I wish you the best of luck. A/C is going to be the very last thing I attempt, as TBH I really don’t want to even mess with it.

I just want it to be a comfy cruiser, I plan on doing One Laps and Power Tours with it. Since I’m going LS swap, I’m going to be using a modern compressor and HOPING I can either adapt the rest of the stock system to work and just having to have custom lines made, or trying to find a modern system that will work with the car... I’m sure its been done and there’ll be lots of info out there but I’m a long ways from that point.

I really don’t think the systems are that complicated, however, all the stupid things you have to do to make sure they work proper are.

That first picture, when I see it, I think,
gasoline.

Interested to see what my mileage is like. Gearing is super tall for highway.
I am predicting 8-12 MPG though.

I remember once seeing a 6.6L Trans Am with a 4 speed trans. I was around 15 and I was like, “BADASS!”
Of course, 400 cu in probably made less than 200 horsepower... Would have been about the same age as yours. So when are you doing the LS swap?

mmm considering it. this has become a serious long term project. I would have to fab something custom for the shaker hood though.
I will hopefully dyno my car at some point and get back to you, but these engines are supposedly seriously underrated for insurance reasons. Supposedly my 6.6 makes 220 compared to a rated 180 and the pontiac block makes 250 compared to 220. The ass dyno makes me believe the first one, not sure if I believe the second one ;). Probably much better now that the massive pillow-sized catalytic converter is gone.
Stay tuned, I will be posting some pics with the block out in a few minutes.
