To be honest, I never new what cinco de mayo was about.
So today I learned that Napoleon III tried to overtake Mexico, his uncle would have so been proud

He did eventually overtake Mexico and installed Archduke Maximilian of Austria as Emperor of Mexico. President Benito Juarez waged a successful guerilla campaign against the invaders which ended in the execution of Max.

Interesting fact: Maximilian’s wife, Archduchess Charlotte, changed her name to Carlota of Mexico in order to be more relatable to Mexicans. The term “Latin Americans” was also used by the French empire in an attempt to create a sort of kinship between the Spanish speaking Mexicans and the French Empire.

Same thing in America. Most Americans have no idea that the US invaded Mexico and forced them to give the US what was half of Mexico.
