If you don’t know what spec you want I’d argue it is not your dream car.

Hotter take: He wants to drive a Porsche so he can be seen driving a Porsche.

Considering that he can’t even decide between the PDK and a manual, and seems concerned about the collectability of the 993, I’d say you’re right.

He just needs one that is brightly colored or has an eye catching wrap.

I’d put a caveat on that for if you’ve never actually driven one. Like if I said my dream car was a 911, I’ve never driven a 911, so I don’t know which one I would want.
That said, if you’ve owned or driven one you probably ought to at least have an idea.

If you’ve never driven one can it really be your dream car? You might hate how it drives.

I’ve understood exactly zero of those what should I buy posts.
Most car enthusiasts (folks on and reading jalopnic) would have a short list already, and MAY ask for help narrowing it down or asking for experience/advice on a certain car.
Clearly this is a jalop thing only. When I informed facebook I was car hunting for a very specific 3 year window of model of a specific trim with specific options, I kept getting suggestions of “similar” vehicles.

I’ve got a running list of about 10 cars that I would dearly love to have. For each and every one of them, I could tell you colors, options, etc. that I’d want, and yet 9 of the 10 are clearly not my dream car.

I’d argue that I only have a short list of cars I hate. If you really told me I had the budget to buy whatever I wanted I’d never be able to make up my mind. Restaurants are difficult enough.

Can a GT3 and Turbo not simultaneously be dream cars? Are we limited to only one dream car?

Yeah, I think it can. I mean it’s right there in the name, dream car. For a lot of people that’s something that’s pure unobtainium, not necessarily something they can go and test drive.
For a long time my dream car was a S1 Jaguar E Type. I’ve never driven one, I might not even fit, but that was it.
Also hot take: I do not have a dream car. There’s no vehicle I really aspire to own.

Well, considering there are as many 911 variants as there are grains of sand on the beach...

Sure it can. A lot of people grew up with cars on their walls that they dreamed of owning. Sure, they’ve never driven them, but they still dream of owning them. Then, some of those people get rich enough to actually drive them...and sometimes learn that their hero disappoints them.

I’d say this applies, to a certain level. If you’re in a narrow market with only a handful of cars made, you take what you can get. On a mass produced scale like a 911, especially a new car, there’s no reason not to have exactly what you want in mind. I know exactly what 911 I want, and it’s 35 years old. I know exactly what S550 Mustang I want. But I’d take any Tucker Torpedo I could get.

The email from the guy is very short and doesn’t tell a complete story of why a 911 is his dream car.
But of all cars, the 911 has a ridiculous number of variations, and he’s talking about choosing among several past generations.
Personally, I’m an OCD list-maker, and if someone told me to pick one and only one Porsche to buy it would be a 944 turbo S, because I’m weird. But if someone said to me to pick one 911, there are so many from which to choose, I would have trouble. 964 turbo 3.6 and 993 GT2 are probably the top of my list since they’re the most bonkers but neither is available anywhere close to $80k.

I don’t expect the guy to know every 911 variant but he should have some idea of what transmission and engine he wants.

When you’re actually about to purchase your dream car you should have some idea about what it is like to drive before you purchase it.

Seems like he likes the IDEA of a Porsche 911. Probably to stand next to it and have people ask if it is a Pooooooooorsch, or to talk about it at dinner parties.

The decision is easy to narrow down, this guys dumb. You find how much you have, convertible or not, 4wd or not, then you end up with a Turbo/Turbo Cab or GT3

Anything but silver or white. My boss has a really pretty dark blue 997 or red would be something too. You do have to have a model idea though because it’s not like they’re all the same
