The horror. FWD 1-series 3/5-door. Let’s hope 2-series will stay RWD.

I thought this was a China only job.

Yes, that 1er Sedan was exclusive to China, but there have been talks about moving it to UKL for some time.

This is one of the rare times I want BMW to be insane and come up with a 2-series liftback Gran Coupe.

Fast forward 10 years. All BMWs are FWD with a $3500 option for AWD. All their transmissions are auto, all Ms are 4 cylinders with bigger turbos.

BMW’s top models by sales : X3 X4 X1 X5 320i(1.3T) X6 345i(2.0T)

The darkness cannot be stopped.

Both BMW and Merc are just trying to copy Audi. Volkswagen Group just have to be around and ruin everything for everyone it seems.

Except Porsche...

The 2 series will be RWD.

If only it magically grew two frameless doors and a liftgate, without raising the roof height.

This is too pessimistic outlook. I don’t think BMW will make the 3 and 5 Series FWD with optional AWD. I can see the 7 Series going AWD only and even the 5 Series AWD only, but the 3 Series no way.

Counterpoint:

Small hatchbacks are about packaging efficiency, and while fun, the rwd 1-series hatch gives up lots of packaging efficiency to make room for the driveline.

Yes, a rwd 1-series is more useful than a rwd 2-series but it’s still not all that useful. It’s more like a taller Z3 M coupe with a useless back seat.

Fun for gearheads, yes, but as a commodity hatchback that’s supposed to get the majority of its sales from people in Europe and similar places cross-shopping it against other comparably sized hatchbacks, its cargo and passenger space is severely lacking.

If you look at the original X1, gearheads liked it because in a way it was like a tall 335i hatch. I considered one for myself for exactly this reason, but ruled it out when I discovered the back seat was barely useable for adults.

The new X1 is on the Mini Countryman platform, and while it’s no longer a hot rod 335i hatch, it is much more useful for its intended purpose of carrying people and stuff.

A fwd 1-series is less fun for gearheads, but better for selling more of them. And hey, Minis are generally some of the more fun fwd hatchbacks out there.

Small coupes can be worthless for carrying people and stuff so the 2-series doesn’t need to go fwd.

The 3-series may be the last to go, but it will.

I’d be curious to see what their take rate is for xDrive on 3 series right now. Locally, the BMW dealer has 11 3-series on their lot. All 11 are xDrive. As well as all 6 4-series.

I read about a rumour last year, but there are conflicting reports whether it’s FWD or RWD.

http://www.bmwblog.com/2016/08/10/bmw-2-series-gran-coupe-rumored-front-wheel-drive/

PS: I love how BMW named the FWD platform UKL Untere Klasse, which literally translates to “lower class”. Even they know it’s for peasants.

Not that I’m okay with this because it’s gay and evil - but when they came out with the X1 which was FWD (unless you got X-Drive) I don’t remember anybody making a fuss. Maybe I just wasn’t as plugged into the online car community then.

3 is effectively AWD only in Canada... only the 340i remains RWD here. I’m not surprised if by 2018 that’s gone as well, the manual is already gone.
