Oppo- I’m selling a trailer i used to haul my RZR around, and a local boro (township/town) would like to purchase it but can only pay via a boro check. I never like accepting checks as a form of payment, but is there any way to do this without putting myself in a bad spot? I thought of asking if i could get the check and wait for it to clear then transfer the title, but that puts the boro in a bad spot.
Pic for attention (my dad’s old impala that he sold)

By “boro check” do you mean a check from a township or the like? If so I’d take it but tell them it has to clear before title transfer.

Yep- thats exactly what I mean. And that was my thought as well, but i cant see them wanted to let me keep the item after they “paid”

If it’s not too expensive maybe it’s worth the gamble. I wasn’t thinking they’d give you a bum check, just that if there’s any issues it may be a royal PITA to deal with a government agency.

Have them get the bank to certify it.

When selling cars, I usually hold the title until all the money is received or the check is cleared, but let them drive off in it with a bill of sale.
Saved me a huge headache on my last sale, the kid only had half of the cash on top of his trade, so I held the title until he paid up. Not long after that, he tried to renegotiate the remaining cash and ended up taking 2 weeks longer than the agreed time to finally hand it over.
(He also recently asked if I would be willing to buy the car back for $1200 more than what he effectively paid for it. I stopped being polite then.)

The check will still be backed by whatever bank the town uses, maybe have the guy from the boro meet you at the bank so you can verify its legitimacy.

A town should have zero issues with getting a certified check. Meaning the bank certified the amount is available. If they provide that then your golden so long as they don’t cancel said check before it clears.

Do the transaction at the bank that the township uses and in front of a teller who then can verify the funds and or cash it.

Yeah, i may go to their bank and have them verify founds and then cash the check. or just hold the title until it clears. Thanks for the advice
