I think it’s funny how we view athletes as near dead and old at 40

It depends on the sport, but a lot of sports are so hard on the body that they’re usually unable to participate by that age.

Except if you’re James Harrison.

Well, they do put themselves through a ton of hell to make it that long.

Don’t forget the weight of the Prowler, which is close to an extra 100#.

MLB, maybe not. NFL, definitely. I once read an average linebacker and lineman has a 2-3 year pro career on average. Usually the knees go first.

And I pulled the shit out of my right calf by pushing 250 pounds on a sled. Now I feel really pathetic.

The average career for all positions is 2-3 years, and linemen actually have the longest careers on average.

I’d say it’s split between players deciding to walk away due to health reasons, and players getting released before the end of their rookie contracts, and not getting picked up on waivers because they simply can’t cut it.

Harrison has his physical conditioning down to a science. His nutrition is perfect, and in addition to his crazy weight training he gets acupuncture regularly and gets massages daily. He spends a crazy amount of money to keep his body in that condition.

I’m not really surprised that he’s still playing at a high level.
