They handle sanitation related crimes. There’s a tremendous amount of sanitation related crime in the city - primarily related to illegal dumping. The “real” police officers are too busy to deal with it. Plus, NYC likes spending an inordinate amount of money on every little function they can think of.

- This response is based on a conversation I had with an NYPD administrator while setting up an inventory and repair facility at one of their mechanic shops.

Interestingly, there was a fake yellow cab NYPD cruiser there getting repaired at the time and we had a long conversation about that whole thing as well.

Still, if they just consolidated the “Sanitation Police” with the NYPD as a division, I feel like that would be much more effective. And cheaper.

Hell, I’m not entirely sure why they can’t just be code inspection people doing that.
