I collect folding rulers, because I am an interesting person who does interesting things, like collecting folding rulers.

Kinja'd!!!

Extended is a John Rabone and Sons folding boxwood ruler produced in Birmingham, England. I love this style, because they fold very thin and have heavy brass joints. Sadly, a lot of them tend to get broken because people don’t pay attention when they fold them.

Kinja'd!!!

Oil joints: always good advice

I think this may be a Stanley, but the information is worn off. It’s cool because it has a slide ruler/depth gauge.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a “Fix ‘n’ Save. The wood is pretty garbage, but it has a slide ruler too.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a German Stabila, it’s metric only—as all proper measuring tools should be. Stabila is still around and they make a damn fine ruler.

Your hobby rules! Was it a lengthy process to obtain them?

I’ll see myself out....

My grandpa collected folding rulers. Are you my grandpa?

To the best of my knowledge, none of my illegitimate children have yet found me, let alone my grandchildren.

Very nice. I’m a little jealous I’ve had one of these in my tool box for years and enjoyed it.

I remember my dad having one or two of these out in the garage as a kid, I mainly used them as toys though. At least I didn’t break any

Cool unique hobby and thanks for sharing

Sweet!

I keep getting tempted to buy one of those Rifkin rulers every time I’m in Home Depot.

You just have so many you’ve lost track of them all.

They’re going to be awfully disappointed when I die and all they get is some folding rulers and part of a broken Jag.

I have my great grandfather’s and my grandfather’s tools, some cool stuff and I’m sure I have a couple of those. I love the hand drills and yankee screwdrivers and stuff.

I’m such a sucker for old tools. I love anything that is well-made and still functions as well as something new.

I really like that Rabone and Sons. I’ve never seen a folding ruler with that configuration. Pretty cool.

My dad had a couple of the regular Stanleys. He’d get mad at us when we’d fold them out and pretend they were fishing poles.

I love that configuration. You can find that type pretty consistently in antique stores, oddly. I think the most I’ve ever paid was $20. Most seem to be around $7–$15, with the cheapest usually having the numbering worn off.

Do you like slide rules. I had a slide rule like this along with the accompanying book.

that’s the name of the book. It is a US defense department report on all the scientific conclusions or whatevs from the atomic testing. It would calculate stuff like the damage it would do to structures the size of the crater and the damage done to humans based on yield of weapon. I think based on the year it was made it might be identical to the type on the movie Dr. Strangelove.
