What could possibly go wrong?

Ride-hailing giant Uber planes to launch in-demand electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (e-VTOL) air-taxi service in Dallas and Dubai in 2020, and has selected partners for development of the technology and infrastructure.

Uber has partnered with Aurora Flight Sciences, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Mooney and Slovenia’s Pipistrel Aircraft. The companies are working in concepts and technologies for electric VTOL aircraft, Jeff Holden, Uber’s chief product officer, said.

Sure, if my Uber driver is going to kill me, might as well make it a flying spectacle.

My friend who used to live in Dubai claims they already have an “Uber Gold” service which is a helicopter, so I don’t know what the difference between that and this is.

Kinja'd!!!2

The difference:

The aircraft uses autonomous flight guidance technology from Aurora’s Centaur optionally piloted aircraft, and the perception and collision avoidance system developed under the U.S. Office Of Naval Research’s AACUS program.

Holden said UberAIR operations will begin with piloted aircraft, but move over time to optionally piloted and eventually fully autonomous flights. Uber’s initial goal is for flying in its e-VTOL aircraft to be twice as safe as driving a car, he said.

NOPE

That’s a whole bucket of NOPE.

There isn’t enough time in the day for me to list all of the NOPE. It’s just ALL OF THE NOPE.

So Uber wants to, in less than three years mind you, develop and receive certification for an electric VTOL craft?

I approve of this being used in Dallas.

There are too many pretentious people in this world, and the herd needs to be culled.

Don’t worry. Trump will have abolished the FAA by then.

Well it won’t work because one of those areas is a barren desert filled with oil-rich religious fanatics surrounded by ignored abject poverty and the other is in the Middle East.

Does Uber realize that us Texans likely will think those things are the precursor to an invasion and thus will likely shoot them down on the spot?

Then you need to redirect them to NYC and LA first!

Like they’d care? Guessing that Uber will ensure these pods at double their cost, and ‘let the free market decide’.

No sir. Dallas has a huge DB concentration per capita. When I hear about people going from out of state to Dallas, I ask them to please not judge my grand state by that place.

Maybe I’m too old to run into them nowadays then, but I always found Houston to have a helluva lot more pretentious people than Dallas. Never lived anywhere else where who your parents are and where you went to school was more important.

Certain parts of Houston are like that (Innerloop snobs are the worst), but Dallas pretentiousness is on par with LA. Debutantes, society, and SMU for their finishing school.
