It would have to either be Pole Position or R/C Pro-AM... although the later definitely sticks out in my mind more.

First car game I’ve played was Spy Hunter (1983). First racing game was either California Cruisin’ or Mario Kart 64.

First racing game I’ve ever owned though was Gran Turismo 3.

Race Macchu Picchu!! Man that takes me back. In the breakdown part of the song when the “drums” drop out I used to feel extra serious, like “Ok... now it’s on.”

The first racing game I ever played was a Ferrari F1 game in black & white on my mom’s original Mac, you steered with the arrow keys and the car sound was horrible.

Yeah, when I played TG, I wasn’t “into” racing, it was just another game. I think I probably didn’t get into racing until Test Drive for the PS2, released in 2002. I thought it was just amazing that you could play pong while the game loaded.

I mean if you don’t count Pole Position, the first one I spent a lot of time with was Need for Speed II and NFSIISE. That’s the system that drove me to figure out how to create a LAN with BNC cables so my friend and I didn’t have to play split-screen anymore!

Probably Outrun. We had it on 5 1/4" floppy. Never played it as much as a demo for Whiplash (DOS) (aka Fatal Racing, later bought the full version), nor as much as MegaRace (Windows) or Wipeout on the N64.

I barely remember it. I mostly played Pitfall at a friend’s, then so much Mario and RC ProAm when he got a NES.

My babysitter’s husband worked for a video game repair company, and they’d always have a cool console in the garage to play on. I think that’s where I first played Pole Position. I remember not being able to see over the wheel...

Well, it pre-dates Pole Position. Pole Position was a revelation when it came out. Being able to go head to head in Sprint is really what made it great. And those steering wheels would spin really fast. I got good at knowing just how to flick them for the corners.

Difficult to say for sure since I first started playing games around age 5 on an Atari at my grandparents’ house, but it was likely Enduro (or Night Driver, but Night Driver sucked). I still have that same cartridge somewhere in my modest collection.

I do clearly remember the first one I owned and regularly played though, which was F-1 Race for the GameBoy. I went through the Grand Prix mode countless times and positively crushed the few who dared challenge me via Link Cable at (elementary) school.
